Wine experts help in choosing a nice bottle of white please!

I'm hoping to buy a nice bottle of white wine for my step mum for Xmas. She likes white rather than red, not too sweet but not vinegar, and usually not sparkling.

It'd be really helpful if it could be from Asda, as I can add it to our online shop (with only 11 days to go before DB arrives I don't feel like trailing out!) However, if it's Tesco then that's fine I'll send DH out!

I've been tee total as I'm PG, and even forgotten what wine even tastes like!

Many thanks for your help.

Fetzer do a really nice bottle. You should be able to buy that in the Australian wine section in Asda. It's a medium dry - they do chardonnay and pinot grigio. Cost around 7 pound per bottle but well worth it.

Travelled round Australia for a year - and to be honest a lot of their wines (excluding Jacobs creek!) are top notch for the price. Certainly were while I was out there anyway!

mumatuks · 29/11/2006 15:03

thanks funkimummy, they only seem to do Fetzer in reds, but I'll check out Tesco instead.
Sounds very nice! (I'm looking forward to having a glass of wine myself this year!)
Thanks for your help.

I had the same feeling last year - baby now 7 months - have now made up for lack of alcohol in blood-stream. Albeit a bit feebly!

Morrisons do Fetzer white. Not sure about Tesco?!? Ernst Julio Gallio do a nice white too.

saltire · 29/11/2006 15:09

i'm sure i have seen fetzer white in tesco, in fact i know i have because MIL got us a bottle the last time she visited.
One of my favourites is Arniston Bay, from tesco, very nice, omly $.99 a bottle

Hi mumatuks, from the description of what she likes I'd suggest a Chablis and I'm sure Asda will have one

Dophus · 29/11/2006 15:11

You can't go wrong with either Chablis or Sancerre IMHO. There's a wide range of prices on both.

mumatuks · 29/11/2006 15:16

Great! Thanks for the extra recomendations! Maybe get two different bottles, I mean one never lasts long enough does it, and it is Christmas!

Asda have

Alsace Alsace Gewurztraminer, Baron De Turckheim 75CL

V nice not too sweet but fruity £6.26

Annie29 · 29/11/2006 15:19

Wolf Blass Chardonnay is very good, and they do a Wolf Blass Eaglehawk as well which I think is a Sauvignon Blanc. Both around £8 but they do offers on it.
Is it too early in the day for a glass of wine now? 3.20pm...

Best not really...

aDadOnMumsnet · 29/11/2006 15:28

A nice Viognier might suit her. Just to throw another name in!

With things like Chablis I find they can vary quite a lot and even the cheaper ones are still expensive iyswim. So without tasting it's a gamble.

xmasmummy · 29/11/2006 15:43

i like jacobs creeki semillon chardonnay.

Iklboo · 29/11/2006 15:45

Yellow Tail Chardonnay is nice - all supermarkets now, about £5-6 a bottle. Not too "oaky".
Zinfandels are quite fruity

Sainsbury's do 1.5 litre bottles of Soave (VERY 90's) for £5 - tells you everything really

saltire · 29/11/2006 15:47

Have just read my last post. it looks like i'd been on the wine before posting. It should read that it is only £4.99 a bottle!

funkimummy · 29/11/2006 15:50

Tally - Ho Saltire!! Is it time to crack a bottle open yet?

So nice to know I'm not the only Mum that likes a bit of alcohol every now and then! Thought it was purely for the pleasure of singletons these days!

RELIEF
PMSL!

funkimummy, believe me, by 6pm i shall be on the wine. I have the ds both at home today. Ds2 has had this tummy bug on and off since last Tuesday. Took him to the doc yesterday and she said to keep him off a couple more days, just to be on the sfae side. Ds1 woke thgis morning very hot and complaining of a sore tummy!
I have a bottle chilling just now

funkimummy · 29/11/2006 15:55

Saltire - doesn't do much for the old PND which has been a complete pain in behind lately!! But I think I'll just go and do the same!!!!!!!!

DS is watching TV at present and DD has just woken up! Got wax two clients tonight (i'm a beauty therapist amongst other things.) best leave the wine until after I've waxed half the hair on their faces off!!
;)

Just to add more suggestions, Sainsbury's have got the loveliest, most drinkable Dr Loosen Riesling (sounds great but trust me it is) for £5.99 at the moment. German wine-making at its best and fits your requirement for a bit of sweetness. An off-dry Sancerre as previously suggested also nice...

aDadOnMumsnet · 29/11/2006 16:21

ooh i like marina's riesling too.

saltire · 29/11/2006 17:12

I'm not a fan of Reisling, i find it too sweet.
Pinot Grigio is nice - Tesco do a finest one which is £4.99, and there's one we get from Asda, but cannot remember the name, and funnily enough have now bottle of it in the house

Starrmum · 29/11/2006 17:14

Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc is lovely - probably around £6.99.

Shall be joining you all in a glass later.

saltire · 29/11/2006 17:20

Well it's dark here, so it must be ok to have one now

yoyo · 29/11/2006 17:33

And there is a Sainsbury's Taste The Difference Marlborough sauvignon which competes with the very best although the label is rather naff. About £6.99 I think. Most places do the Villa Maria sauvignon which is also pretty good.

Is the DrLoosen the 11% alc/vol one? Slight fizziness on the tongue?

Flamesparrow · 29/11/2006 17:35

Not relevant, but I misread - saw the title and then thought it was in "childbirth"
