Christmas Table Decorations

I've just booked panto for Christmas eve and sent my annual festive activities list to friends so we can get Santa visits etc booked in, so I'm feeling all festive I've not been listening to Christmas songs yet at all

Now I need to plan my Christmas table.

Do you decorate your table for lunch? What did you use?

We have a big table so struggle to find nice runners etc, where do you get yours?

One year when we had a massive table I used white decent quality disposable table cloths overlapping and covered the whole thing in a length of net curtain material which had gold stars embroidered on it. Gold crackers and candles - looked beautiful Smile (and very cheap compared to proper linen)

glenthebattleostrich · 05/09/2015 17:07

I love that idea Faux, thanks. Stupidly it didn't occur to me to hit the local fabric shops and make something (or at least ask my very handy with sewing machine friends to make something for me)

I'm sure if you have a big table then you are sorted for table cloths, but just in case you aren't, my mum uses a very large sheet (king size or bigger)

I'd look on Pinterest for ideas for decorating a large table. My table will be the same as last year - white, purple and gold. Gold charger plates, coasters and napkin rings with a purple runner and napkins. I found a website called house of crackers (I think) that do colour coordinated crackers. I'm going to buy ones that I can fill myself as the ones I did last year were very well received. I had a couple of glass vases filled with tiny baubles and battery operated fairy lights.

That sounds lovely Wife, I do the vase filled with baubles for the windowsills. They look so pretty. I'll have a little google for the crackers, filling my own sounds good, I love buying pretty little things from Amazon and ali express.

Sorry to go off post slightly :)

I filled my own crackers last year for the first time and it was really successful.

I have a large ivory/white table cover, and a dark green one that I use as the base , then layer with the chiffony material from The Range ( the white one has tiny silver spots Grin ) and they wash on a delicate cycle in a net bag.

I had blue last year (not my favourite colour) because I bought John Lewis reindeer crackers which had a blue background.

I've done ivory/gold with confetti stars under the chiffon (stops them ending up on someones plate)

Magenta and gold is lovely and opulent.I bought gold charger plates and beaded coasters.

This year I'm planning the bottle green and silver. I have a silver candleabra so will buy silver or green candles. Silver crackers and silver + green wrapped sweets in a large glass bowl to finish.

I use a big glass bowl with floating candles sometimes.

I used to do a small box of tablesweets per plate but they didn't get eaten Sad after the meal.

I always start with something I love (like the crackers) and plan from there.

Boxing Day and Christmas Eve have different colour schemes though I need to plan round my crockery. I have all white (which is my daily crockery) and ivy pattern green/white.

New Years Eve we always have the white and silver.

Tuts at currie and peers over the top of horn rimmed glasses in a judgey manner .

Xmas Wink

Currie Christmas Day was about the only day of the year we didn't eat off our laps in front of the TV Smile My mum insisted our huge family sat around the table and got the cloths, posh crockery and crystal out. It was a huuuge faff when I was growing up but I love setting the table now - even though dinner is perfectly timed to finish so that we can watch Dr. Who.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 05/09/2015 22:12

Ah yes, Christmas dinner in our house is after dark and before Dr Who Xmas Grin

I bought lovely red chargers last year, and gold placemats for the middle of the table. (And then lost them before Christmas - they turned up 6 weeks ago!).

I don't tend to have much decoration on the table. 6 glass candlesticks of varying heights, filled and lit. And the Christmas Candle goes on as well.

We use the good crockery, with the silver cutlery (wedding presents) and nice plain glasses. Although my plan last year was to use plain white crockery (everyday but nice) and have the red and gold running through instead - good crockery is white and blue. With red paper napkins (nice ones) and gold confetti stars scattered.

I keep saying I will get a floral/greenery tablecentre, and forgetting to order/make one. Maybe this year......

curriegirl · 07/09/2015 13:19

haha! We eat at the table every other day (just about) so this is our dress down day. Usually we spend it in PJs, stuffing our faces with lovely food and drinking champers.

We generally don't go over the door. We love it. I have invited people this year though so I probably will have to do something with the table!!

CakeNinja · 07/09/2015 22:45

Oh my god, we have 18 round our table, we consider ourselves lucky to have cutlery! Would never ever be able to fit anything else in Grin

This year I am going to use a wheat/dark red tablecloth with embroidered edges. It's a square cloth and I lay it diagonally so that it lies in a diamond shape, IYSWIM. I prefer a more relaxed feel so I just leave the table itself bare, but if I wanted to smarten it up I'd use a white linen as a base over the whole of the table.

I will use a georg jensen Christmas candle holder with red candles as the centrepiece. I think I'm going to weave ivy or holly through it, but might change my mind on that. I have two little brass pheasant tea light holders that I'll place at either end of the table.

I've got two new table runners for the sideboards either side of the dining room, and coordinating napkins.

Red charger plates, plain white plates.

candykane25 · 12/09/2015 22:55

Last year was tartan with stag patterned napkins and crackers and i wrapped christmas fancy dtess items and labelled them instead of placenames which was a but of silly fun.
I might just do red and silver and slate this year. I have silver stag candle holders and silver snowflake napkin holders, and slate placemats. Maybe i will chalk christmas slogans on the mats.

For my DS , I'd have "Sit down and eat your sprouts"
For my Dad "Sit down, I'll get the gravy and no, there's no butter in it"

It would save me a load of time and breath ........Grin

I have a very large dining room table and last year I got a tablecloth from tkmaxx for it.

Last year my table decorations were nutcracker themed. I had nutcracker crackers and party hats and made napkin rings from nutcracker silver charms I found on eBay.there was also a nutcracker chocolate in each glass.

I made large sweets from paper honeycomb balls and cellophane and large lollipops from pool noodles and wrapping paper tubes. In the middle of the table and on the mantelpiece were several large nutcrackers.
