I'm amazed at how much Dr Who and Pirates of the Caribbean stuff there is.
DS hasn't seen either of these, as we consider them just not suitable at his age.
Are we mollycoddling him, or are huge numbers of other young children seeing this stuff?

I'm only just happy getting him the Action Man toys, and even then I don't particularly want him to see the films much.

We were discussing getting DVDs of the vintage Dr Who, mind you (much less sinister, as I recall.

Never did this for ds, although Star Wars did make it through
WE foudn knex and lego and geomag essential - plus Hawkins Bazaar for the curious little things that keep boys amused.

ds (six and a half) doesn't like Dr Who or Pirates of the Caribbean either.

He likes lego, normal pirates and Hot Wheels. Oh, and anything dinosaur related.
And Scooby Doo.

my son is nearly 8 and he loves dr who and pirates of the caribbean. i think it depends on the child whether its suitable, if they are a quiet and shy child it may not be right but my sons are both confident outgoing little boys who love things like that. my other son is 5 and seems to think he is captain jack sparrow he adores pirates and we have got him a jack sparrow dress up set for xmas. they prob shouldnt watch them but all the other kids at their school do so i dont think i would ever hear the end of it if they werent allowed

Xmasmummy,

lots of ds's friends watch Dr Who as well, apparently. So What, we don't think it's suitable for ds, so he doesn't watch it (nor any of the other scary or violent stuff that his friends have access to). Also interested what you say about character. ds is a VERY confident, outgoing child (too much I think sometimes), but we believe that his imagination doesn't need stimulating in that direction at all.

dh is dying for the day when they can watch Dr Who together, but not yet. dh tapes it and watches after ds's bedtime

My ds aged 7 (nearly 8 ) would really like to watch dr Who and Pirates of the Caribbean, but they both terrify him. He does like Star Wars though (more from the books/annuals than from the film).

He has asked for lego this christmas - there are some ranges in there (the Vikings one for example) which are not tied into any film. He has also asked for Hotwheels. The other thing he likes is his Gameboy.

My ds is 6.75 and wants lego, sciencey stuff and Antlantis (where you build an ant colony) for Christmas.

He's seen 1 episode of Dr Who by accident (at a friends who assumed he watched it) and he had nightmares about it. I have only seen trailers for P of C but I think the effect would be similar.

His friends who watch these things tend to have older brothers.

What also shocks me is children of this age 9and younger) watching Lord of the Rings - I think those films are really frightening.

I agree puddle.

DS loves his lego, I want to buy him a set with lots of wheels in it, does such a thing exist.

He has seen the first 3 star wars films (that is the first 3 that came out, rather than the most recent 3 which were the first three in the story ), but doesn't really understand what is happening. I find myself explaining as they go along. He loves playing the lego star wars game on the computer too.
