What to go with play kitchen?

We're planning to get DD the ikea play kitchen and I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions of reasonably cheap bits and pieces to go with it. I've already got a wee kettle and toaster, the pans from ikea and a dustpan to hang on the side (DD is obsessed with cleaning!). Gong to get my mum to make a wee apron and I'll pick up some tea towels out the pound shop or somewhere similar. DD already has a tea set.

Any other suggestions? I'm looking to spend about another £30-40. :)

Microwave?
We have microwave and my lo loves it. We also have washing machine and toaster but the toaster isnt that great

Hoover? A girly Henry? They do you ones

Toy food! I wouldn't personally bother with the Ikea fabric food - I found the quality quite poor given the price.
Dd has a massive plastic shopping basket of different types of toy plastic food, which was about £4 from Asda. It's a bit annoying to have around and quite tacky looking, but she plays with it loads (and it always comes out when her friends visit). And it goes away in the Ikea kitchen cupboards, so I don't have to see it all the time.
We do also have a Melissa and Doug fabric pizza set which is a really lovely thing - great quality.
I did get the Ikea stainless steel pan set to go with he kitchen - that is quite nice, and hangs nicely on the little hooks.

We have:
Plastic shopping basket with play food (you could get a shopping trolley)
Chef outfit
Pizza that comes apart into slices and sticks back together (Velcro)
A birthday cake that also separates out
Wooden fruit n veg you can cut in half and Velcro back together
Kettle
Toaster
Food mixer
Henry Hoover which actually works.

Melissa and Doug stuff is pretty good, but in the pricey side so worth checking amazon as they frequently reduce it.

ELC do lots of nice wooden cake sets. We joke DD has enough to open a wooden cake shop now!!

Bolshybookworm · 30/08/2015 08:06

A big set of plastic plates, bowls, tea set, cutlery. We have endless tea parties in our house Smile

Kraggle · 30/08/2015 08:10

Plastic tea set with played, cups, tea pot. We got the fabric veg basket and cakes from ikea to go with ours and also a bumper pack of food from Argos (Chad Valley I think) ds also has a shopping basket, trolley and more plastic food along with a little washing machine next to the kitchen and a toy Dyson.

She likes making us breakfast and cups of tea!

Definitely food! Melissa and Doug do nice sets - pizza set, cookies set, cupcake set.

Another option would be to stick things like dried pasta and rice in jars to be used.

IKEA to a really good set of utensils which look lovely hanging from the hooks at the back of the kitchen. They aren't very expensive.

trixymalixy · 30/08/2015 08:47

Wooden cutting food or those Melissa and Douglas sets. DD has the ice cream M&D set and it's fab.

ELC have loads of plastic and wooden food sets. The ELC section of my local Mothercare had a sale on earlier in the week.
MIL is buying DD1 an ikea kitchen, too!

WeAllHaveWings · 30/08/2015 09:24

Sounds to me like you've got loads already, maybe let her engage her imagination on what you've got and spend the extra money on a different play theme.

NeverNic · 30/08/2015 17:52

Definitely more food. We had all the crockery going but without plenty of food 'to Cook' it can be a little boring for them after awhile

turdfairynomore · 30/08/2015 18:00

The ikea plastic table and chairs if you haven't already got one would be very versatile? Maybe your mum could make a tablecloth to match the apron? My kids (now 21 & 18!) loved "real" food like washed out tins, variety pack cereal boxes and the tiny tins of lemonade from aeroplanes -which can now be easily bought in supermarkets.

AlohaMama · 30/08/2015 18:38

I'll definitely second the Melissa and Doug wooden/velcro food sets - pizza, cookies, fruit etc. Every kid who comes to visit loves them adn they can pretend to put the pizza in the oven etc. Also cheap plastic tea set went down well here - DD is forever pouring me cups of tea!

Thanks for all the suggestions! I looked into Melissa and Doug stuff and have got her a felt sandwich set as she loves her sandwiches at lunchtime and it has a load of different bits to the set. Going to start keeping boxes too - we've started baking so I've been getting packet mixes for ease just now so can keep those. Also like the wee variety pack suggestion - like a wee mini Seinfeld kitchen with all the cereal boxes Grin. I've got loads of felt food patterns saved on Pinterest but DD2 is due in 3 weeks so I'm fully aware that it's highly unlikely I'll get round to making any of those, no matter how good my intentions are lol. Going to get mum to make a table cloth too. She's got a new wee table and chairs for arts and crafts in her new room (DD2 is moving into her old room) so that's a really good idea too - thanks you!
