Talk to me about stockings

Who gets them? Grown ups or just children?
Are they from parents or Father Christmas?
If you fill the stockings and grown ups have them too, who fulls yours?

Can't decide if it's a tradition I want to get into.

Everyone who wakes up in the house on Christmas morning gets one.

And any chocolate found within must be eaten for breakfast Grin

See to me DVDs are not a stocking present! That's a main present!

00100001 · 24/08/2015 07:23

Drives me crazy when you see really quite expensive things sold as "stocking fillers"

Loki17 · 24/08/2015 08:54

I put main presents small enough to fit in the stocking in the stocking, including things like a dvd (I agree it is a main present). Then bulk out with chocolate. DD loves tattoos so I bought some of the tattoo pens and they will go in her stocking because they fit. I don't by cheap things specifically for the stocking though because it ends up being an extra cost. DD had about 10 presents in her pile last year, plus 5 small things in her stocking.

In our house, the stocking is for DD from Santa.

In my parents house, anyone who sleeps over on 24th gets a stocking of fruit, sweets and a book from my Dad (pair of socks must be left out).

And in recent years, the 6 adult siblings (and now significant others - so 10 in all) have done a Kris Kringle draw. So we buy 1 big present for 1 person each and a small thing, €5 or less, for everyone else. Those smaller things go into a stocking - I sewed enough a few years ago for all involved at the time but need to add a couple more now. Those are very clearly adult things, and part of the presents under the tree late in the afternoon, so no chance of any children getting confused about Santa leaving things.

And to answer a question on another thread, the stocking and whatever presents are beside it in the morning are from Santa. The rest of the presents are under the tree and from whoever gave them, and that includes a present from DH and I for DD (usually something reasonably practical like clothes or craft items). We usually open those in the late afternoon after doing all our visits and getting the dinner into the oven - so it's now relaxing time at home for just us.

DVDs can cost as little as £3 though, would that still be a 'main' present?

DD is only 19 months so will be nearly 2 at Christmas but she will get things like tooth brush, hair bits, colouring pencils, snacks (that i'd have bought anyway) in her stocking from FC.

yes a £3 DVD would still be a main present in my house :) The cost of the item isn't what makes it a main present imo.

Stocking presents in our family are things like:

Tooth brush/Toothpaste
small tube of fruit pastiles/smarties/whatever
small packs of haribo
Hair scrunchies
small travel size smellies
"Pocket money" toys (yoyos, small cars etc)
Small travel packs of wet wipes/make up remover pads/facemasks
Small fruit
Nuts
scratch cards

that kind of thing :)

I do the stockings (although officially fc of course) and everyone gets them :) currently I have some wellies for home bargains (a tenner for Emma Bridgewater!) but that is all for mine :)

We just have stockings for children, and they come from Father Christmas. They are a pain, but I remember how magical they were as a child.

My tip is not to have too many drinks before attempting the nighttime switch!

notaprincessbutaqueen · 26/08/2015 14:05

we all get a stocking :) for the kids its stuff like undies/socks/chocolates and a small gift or 2 (notebooks/pens etc). for me and dh, our stockings are our gifts to each other. we don't do main tree presents as don't have a lot of money and Christmas is more about the kids so we budget £50 each to fill each others stocking. x

notaprincessbutaqueen · 26/08/2015 14:08

oh and they all come from father Christmas. they are placed on the end of the beds and the kids can open them whenever they wake up (even if its 3am!). no one is allowed downstairs to see the tree until at least 6am so its something to keep them entertained and know that santa has been without getting the whole house up!
