He LOVES Dinosaurs... I need to say this repeatedly... Whatever I buy needs to be dinosaur related, however - he has loved them since he was 2 - he owns almost anything I can think of relating to dinosaurs (and loves it all!)

He has already:

  • Almost all vtech switch n go dinos (including the giant t-rex)
  • a paleontologist kit (made by me last xmas) including bag, outfit, binoculars, fossil hunting tools, fossil specemins
  • about a million toy dinosaurs
  • loads of dinosaur books - both fact and story - he loves them all and reads them regularly
  • Fossil dig kits
  • build a dino type sets
  • dinosaur colouring sets
  • dinosaur bedding
  • dino themed room (pteradactyl light / curtains / giant wall stickers)
  • DVDs - disney dinosaur, walking with dinosaurs, the land before time

He will turn 6 just after christmas, and his interest is NOT waning! I'm running out of ideas so any from anyone else with a dino mad kid would be appreciated!!!

Birds are dinosaurs too you know, how about a bird watching kit and a subscription to the RSPB magazine?

OohMrDarcy · 21/08/2015 12:04

yeah he knows all about the bird evolution things.... but isn't overly interested - though he enjoyed a bird of prey display on holiday a year or two ago

I know it's not strictly Dino related but DS was 6 yesterday and the biggest hit was the Natural History Museum pocket microscope. It cost very little and it's brilliant! Recommended to me on MN I think. Could look at fossils, sand, leaves etc?

iknowimcoming · 21/08/2015 12:49

Have you looked into dinosnores at NHM? Can't remember the age range but we took ds and his mates a few years ago and it was fab!

WankerDeAsalWipe · 21/08/2015 12:56

Also, has he seen the Ice Age movies?

Also there used to be some sort of trainers that left dinosaur prints behind when you walked on muddy ground - i'll go have a google.

OohMrDarcy · 21/08/2015 13:09

ooh more ideas

he already has a dino bike and helmet
dinosnores - looks amazing but need to be 7... .two guesses what his birthday treat will be that year!
Ice age - he loves them

Those dinosoles are ace - I think he's had a pair before (and has clarks dino range school shoes!) but will check them out too

He already has a play mat - but yes starting to outgrow it

Its a tricky age for him actually - as he is SO into them, and loves fact finding that the 'little kiddie' type dino stuff hasn't cut it for more than a year... the last book I got him was this one - he loves it and regularly reads it with me (or has a go on his own - little bits):

Funnily neither of my two boys were into dinosaurs - DS1 liked vehicles and lego and Ds2 was more a fluffy kitten man :) and then got into Anime and Manga and Pokémon and all things Japanese. At 15 DS1 is into engineering (building things & computer modeling)/drawing/computer programming and DS2 at 14 is still into anything Japanese - especially computer games. So it seems that their interests even from a young age can become quite enduring so you might need ideas for many years to come....

OohMrDarcy · 21/08/2015 13:29

haha thanks Wankers Grin

He has been telling me since he was 2.5 that he is going to be a paleontologist (and yes he knew what it meant).... For a while family were surprised that the 'phase' had endured so long, but now they are just resigned that he might actually become one!

He does enjoy lego and a few other bits and bobs (power rangers and shit) but for example... last time he played with the lego he built 3 vehicles... they were named as follows:

this one is the pterasaur catcher - its going to catch a quetzelcoatlus
This one is the plesiousaur catcher - its going to tag a mosasaur so I can study it (like your sharks get tagged mummy)
and this one is for the dinosaurs - its got a net to catch them safely... I think its going to catch a troodon as they are too clever to catch without it

Shock

He is one seriously clever kid, and he absolutely adores finding out facts about them - his current thing is working out which period each dinosaur lived in and therefore how likely it is they would have met each other - eg he sees a colouring pick of some kind of predator attacking a stegasaurus or something and he'll sit there and check his book for when they all lived and use it to decide which dino was attacking it - whereas the person who drew it... probably just drew a dinosaur lol!

It's basically a series of fact but my two love these office toy adapted for kids. Very tactile, and they love just fiddling with them.

addictedtosugar · 21/08/2015 13:38

Oh, and I assume you've seen prehistoric?

WankerDeAsalWipe · 21/08/2015 13:39

I do remember that age well - DS2 wanted to be a Judge from when he was about 2 going on 3 as OH had told him that that was who made the rules (this being after yet another refusal to do something that we needed him to do and OH telling him he had to because it was the rules...) However, I've been told on here that he can't be a Judge as he has the wrong name :o It did cause some confusion in later years as he couldn't work out why we would let Simon Cowell (Judge) decide the laws of the land. I commend his ability to suss people out based on this :)

Can still see him getting into law as he would still argue black was white just to be awkward - he does like history and politics a lot too though so who knows. He started talking before he could sit up and hasn't stopped pushing everyone's buttons since. DS1 is quietly clever - he amazed the nursery at age 3 by doing a 60 piece jigsaw with no picture - they didn't believe he had done it so took it all apart again and got him to repeat the task under supervision!

OohMrDarcy · 21/08/2015 13:40

That pop up book looks amazing- will be getting that!!

Hi what about hero mashers? They have brought out a Jurassic world range.
www.amazon.co.uk/Jurassic-World-Mashers-Velociraptor-Animal/dp/B00YX0CQIM/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1440160953&sr=8-15&keywords=Hero+mashers

It's basically figures you can take apart and mix and match with, they have transformers and avengers range too.

OohMrDarcy · 21/08/2015 13:45

Your boys sound ace wankers Grin

I suppose I better start a thread for ideas for DD too.. she's getting trickier too!

OohMrDarcy · 21/08/2015 13:46

Glad I posted now... getting lots of ideas!

addictedtosugar · 21/08/2015 13:51

I got it from a link on mn at Christmas last year!

WankerDeAsalWipe · 21/08/2015 13:51

Ah thanks MrDarcy - Ds1 is borderline aspergers and now struggles socially but is still quietly clever - we worry about his future a lot though. DS2 is a royal pain in the arse quite a lot of the time but I love him to bits - one day he'll figure out which side his bread is buttered on and stop biting the hand that feeds him. :o he is very stimulating though and we can get some good debates going and he does like to hear your views on society etc. DS1 doesn't participate in any of that as he has no views on anything - he is basically overly compliant which is why DS2 is such a shock to the system!

I am sure your DS will continue his interest in the world and there is nothing greater than an enquiring self motivated mind - I bet he is really successful in whatever avenue he chooses. I am sure your DD is great too and I am sure people would have some good ideas for her as well.

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 21/08/2015 14:05

There's a new Dreamworks series on Netflix called Dinotrux - I reckon there will be whole new range of toys coming out associated with that for Xmas.

My 5 yr old loves it, he's dino obsessed!

OohMrDarcy · 21/08/2015 14:59

ohhh will be checking that out too - we love netflix !

Have you taken him to the history museum in Oxford? I find it quieter so a bit better than London

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 21/08/2015 17:13

there's a t-rex build a bear if he might enjoy that?

how about dragons? how to train your dragon - theres loads of merchandise Grin

pokemon - theres dragon types. lots of merchandise cards, toys, books.

theres older dino lego aswell as the jurassic world sets.we have a couple of light up dinosaurs.

OohMrDarcy · 21/08/2015 17:17

he's not overly fussed by dragons or pokemon

Will definitely be on the hunt for dino style lego - that would make his freaking year Grin

Not done the history museum in Oxford - will look into that for the future definitely
