Which (board) games are popular with your four year olds?

We don't have very many games in our house so I was thinking about buying the DD's one/some for Christmas, they are just 4 and almost 3.

I was wondering whether anyone's children had any great favourites that they could recommend? I was thinking along the lines of Operation (perhaps mine are still a bit young for this), Buckaroo, Hungry Hippos, Monkey Business, that kind of thing.

OP posts:

Operation is a fave with mine, as is buckaroo, pop up pirates and guess who. They really enjoy playing them and ds2 has done since he was 3 i think

Orchard Toys do a load aimed at small children. Stomach Ache and Incy Wincy Spider are my dd's favourites.

She also likes dominoes (she is 4.5, can mostly count the spots now). Good for standing in rows and pushing over, too.

princessmel · 23/11/2006 16:04

We've just played Pop up Puff ( from Elc) and both my ds (nearly 4) and my dd (15 months) love it.
They also love Carriboo- a Cranium game, Bounce bounce Tigger, Noahs Ark- a posting/matching game from elc. All of these were pressies when my son was 2 or 3.

scotlou · 23/11/2006 16:05

"Ghostly Galleon" is good for that age - easy to play (and I like it too!). The Orchard Toys ones like "Shopping List" are popular. My too also like matching games - you know, pairs of cards that you turn over and they have to find the matching pair? ds (6) is MUCH better than me!

NomDePlume · 23/11/2006 16:06

Guess Who and Operation are on my 4yo DD's Christmas list. I think they have an advised age of 6+ though

mumoflots · 23/11/2006 16:20

my son is 5 (a young 5) if that any good, i have brought him a game called red light green light from argos for 20 quid, he saw it on the tv and asked for it.

nailpolish · 23/11/2006 16:22

ndp i thought about getting guess who for dd1 (whos 4 too)

but dont they need to be able to read the names for the final guess?

dd1 here likes buckaroo at present

and dominoes

NomDePlume · 23/11/2006 16:23

Yes they do really, np, but I'm sure we'll come up with a way around that until she learns to read properly

nailpolish · 23/11/2006 16:25

they could just say

"is it him?" and you have to look (!)

Guess Who was definitely my favourite game when i was little for many many years

i will be very disappointed if dd's dont like it as much as i did/do!

LIZS · 23/11/2006 16:26

dd(5) enjoyed a version of Hungry Hippos for several years, simialrly Pop Up Pooh. Also loves Guess Who, all Orchard Games - especially Pop to the Shops, Tummy Ache, Washing Line - & Cranium Hullabaloo .

My dd (nearly 4) loves Elephun and Buckaroo. She wants DohNutters and the balancing pizza game for Christmas. She also likes the pairs games and snap.

My 4 year old ds loves bed bugs, operation but one called whatever next is his absolute favourite. Little visitors always enjoy it too.

southeastastra · 23/11/2006 16:37

my ds(5) loves shopping list too!

collision · 23/11/2006 16:38

My 4 yr old loves Kerplunk and Elefun.

He wants a tooth fairy game soon which gives him choc money whenever he wants!!

ASDA have loads of these branded games for £5.

hulababy · 23/11/2006 16:44

DD likes Hungry Hippos, Buckaroo and Guess Who at the moment.

We play Guess Who with only one board out at a time at the moment. DD takes it in turns to either Ask the questions or to answer them. Having both boards going at once got a bit confusing!

She is getting Scrabble Junior for Christmas.

PeachyClair · 23/11/2006 16:55

bibic use shopping list toteach memory skills to high functioning children, DS loves it

clumsymum · 23/11/2006 16:55

no one has suggested Top Spin (chad valley, from woolworths), a sort of battling spinning tops game.

It's great fun, easy for 3 and 4 y.o.'s to understand, quick to play (so they don't get bored half way thru')

Not expensive either

PandaG · 23/11/2006 17:00

agree with pop to the shops, shopping list, guess who, and anything by oerchard toys - they are usually excellent. Walk the plank is good, as everyone moves each time - you move the number shown on your coloured die - so no waiting for your turn. Is pirate themed so good for Ds's. Simple card games played here too - 7s, beat your neighbour, and DD loves simply sorting the cards into order in suits, keeps her amused for ages.

rabbitrabbit · 23/11/2006 17:09

Second the Orchard Toys comment. My ds (3.6) loves their Bus Stop, Incy Wincey Spider and Around the World.

NatalieJane · 23/11/2006 17:22

My DS, also 4, loves Don't wake up Dad, Tumbling Monkeys, Operation, Dominoes, Hungry Hippos.

He has asked for GuessWho?, Junior Scrabble, Screwball Scramble, and that red light green light stop go thingy-me-bob that keeps getting advertised.

PeachyClair · 23/11/2006 17:23

Top spin IS good, ds2 had that for 3rd birthday- very pleased was he

yossa · 23/11/2006 17:26

another vote for Guess Who? - we just wait until we get to the last one with DS(4) and them show the card.
Also - absolutely loved elefun when we played it at a mates house - santa has got him that this year!

LIZS · 23/11/2006 17:29

Ravensburger games are good too - dd enjoyed Snails' Pace Race at playgroup and there are various junior versions of Labyrinth.

Dottydot · 23/11/2006 17:31

Another vote for tummyache and also Jenga, which I like doing as well!
