Anybody any suggestions? I'm starting to look at my options, and having done a bit of Christmas shopping already, I'm keen to start looking at different options.

Is there a reason it has to be a joint present?

A wooden shop. We bought one from Asda online for dd for £35. I got a cash register and pretend food from B&M. I also bought a pick and mix dispenser. I spent about £50 all in. DD loves it, but if she had someone to play with it would have spared me hours of being a customer!

Magnatiles for sure!! Our children received Magnatiles as a joint present at around that age (and we have added sets each year since then, we probably have over 500 now, but 100 is a good number to start with). Expensive but versatile with great longevity - a huge draw for kids of all ages who visit. Older kids will build intricate buildings and populate them with Playmobil or Lego figures, but even kids as young as 2 or 3 will have fun with them.

Thanks for the magnetile idea; I'm getting DS a pack of 40 for his birthday and if he likes them I'll buy more at Christmas!

Wooden train set. All the different train sets can be out together, so you can build on it over time and spend whatever you like according to your budget.

You could give them a train each, then the track as a joint present.

Our train track has been our most played with toy. Visiting adults seem to enjoy it too!

I did exactly the same as lokibear for my DD'S last year aged 5 and 2. has been a massive hit and gets played with daily.

Marble run? Might perhaps have to watch the younger one for a year or two for marbles going into places they shouldn't...

how about a play shop? it's quite expensive but they regularly have 20% off things so keep an eye out. My friend was thinking of getting it for her DD's (5 and 2) to share.

I've done garden stuff as joint before and a play tent. One year I got a (second hand) wii. Last year we got a pile of board games, I divided them into piles so they could each unwrap some but that was effectively a joint present.
