Digital camera for 7 yr old

DS (7) would like a camera for xmas ... needs to be digital where you can see the picture straight away, easy to operate, and not too expensive. Anyone got experience of this they can recommend -- thanks.

You can actually buy childrens digital cameras now that are less fiddly and more durable than 'grown-up' ones madly wracking my brains to remeber what shops I saw them in recently!

Fisher Price do one - have a look here Only thing is they are for ages 3 and up so at 7 your DS may find it a bit clunky?

I know I have seen them elsewhere though. Will keep thinking

Thanks Vanilla that's a good start, anyone else got any suggestions...

I got one for dd in tescos last year, not sure if they are doing them again this year. It was 29.99 and really good and easy to use. Saying that MIL got one also and she hasnt a clue!

Tesco have acouple for 49 quid. They have cheaper ones (retailing at £33 or so)but when we tried to work out the menu options these seemed a bit complicated. The relatively more expensive ones (vivicam - video too but no sound) Offer alot more quality, pc and TV connection, and you can add your own SD card later when she gets used to it. The cheaper ones don't allow you to do this I think

LO (8) is having one from Argos for Christmas this year - can't remember the make but it's around £30. It's got a reasonable number of megapixels so the pictures should be reasonable. Just the memory card is very small so will also need one of those. It doesn't have an optical zoom facility (but her dad says that's a good thing as it's one less thing to knock or break).

Think it'll good for a start.

Just bought dd one for her 8th birthday. its the cheapest one argos do at £33. Its not fantastic but is fine for what she needs. Its made by Vivitar

Thanx evryone for your helpful suggestions.

That's the one we're getting - it's by Vivitar.

Are the pictures good enough to print off if necessary?

amynnixmum · 18/11/2006 10:39

Not sure blondilocks as we haven't got a card for it yet so we have had it on the lowest setting so that dd can take a few photos. I don't think the lowest setting is good enough for printing but it keeps dd happy. I think the picture would be fine if they were on the highest setting - certainly good enough for an 8 year olds needs.

I mainly want to avoid any more film developing costs!

Mummymonster · 18/11/2006 14:01

does it have to be new/pristine etc? I would suggest hitting eBay and grabbing a bargain there.

DS is getting DH's old one to point and press at teddy (awh!) as he loves snapping piccies (he's 3 btw!) We'll print them off and make a photo book for him.

carriemumsnet · 06/12/2006 12:09

I was just about to start this thread as I want to get a cheap indestructible digital camera for ds (age 5)... don't you just love it when your question's already been answered before you ask it? Will go and check out argos now (via the Mumsnet shopping page of course...which is here in case anyone's missed it!)

Thanks

I'm glad to see the Vivitar mentioned as that's what we've got dd for Christmas. Seems we made a good choice!

I bought DS1 (6 years) a proper digital camera for his birthday. It's a Fuji Finepix - has alll the features and movies (no sound though which I didn't spot). I thought he'd grow out of the kids ones too quickly.

As it is expensive and he loses things. We keep it and he asks for it. We carry it around.

It's been great for him and he loves playing with it.
