OK!

I'm distressed reading about those of you who are worried sick about Christmas and having no money to buy things for your children!

Rather than sit of my ample backside and do nothing I have the following proposal to make.

Those of you who have old toys/gifts which are in good condition, or who are willing to buy a new gift for a child can register your contributions with me.

Those of you who are down on your uppers can send me your details - name, address, age and gender of children, what kind of things they like!

Those lovely MN who will send me Christmassy things will be matched up with those people who would like a bit of a hand with Christmas.

Those giving pressies will wrap the pressie and label it 'To XXX from Santa', and then send it to the address given to them.

If people receiving presents want to remain anonymous then I can ask people to send their contributions to me, and I will forward them onto the gift receiver, I will bear the postage cost of the onwards posting!

If people want to help, but have no toys etc to do so, then a small amount on a gift voucher for woolies, argos or the like can be sent instead!

Please post on this thread whether you think it is a winger - if we get at least 10 givers and 10 receivers then I will go ahead with it, and will post my email address to start the ball rolling!

Receivors must be regular MNetters, in case we are deluged from other sites

So it is over to you guys - good idea or not???

MerlinsBeard · 24/11/2006 10:38

this thread never fails to bring tears to my eyes....and i'm not normally a cryer!

Paddlechick666 · 24/11/2006 10:38

I'm a receiver and would very much like to send a thank-you to whoever is matched with me.

however, if you would prefer to remain anonymous i respect that.

i'm also hoping to be a giver and again am happy to put RL name in parcel but don't expect to hear back from my recipient.

Hazel, that is amazing!

I live in Middlesex and have Tuesdays off and I have quite a big boot on my car. I could pick them up but unfortunately I have nowhere I could store them.

munz · 24/11/2006 10:41

wow hazel that's lovely.

nemo - totally agree with you threre, we were very kindly nominated by someone, I told DH and his reponce was for the most part, 'but there will be someone else who needs it more than us - we're not as bad off as most'. i'm only thankful that someone did nominate us as tbh i'd never have done it myself and would have spent this coming month worrying about how I would make the money spread around the bills etc. Last night I managed to time (quite well lol) a book party for children so I earnt a little bit of commission there and used it to get J a few little things

like shiney - i'm also giving some of J's old bit's n bobs etc. (or at least things he has duplicates of) it's not very much but if it brings a smile to a LO's face, and also helps mum out/does someone else a turn then i'll be v happy

hazell · 24/11/2006 10:51

The trees are bulky even though they are only 1 metre high - you would need a van to collect them

FrivolentDemon · 24/11/2006 10:59

more tears

ssd · 24/11/2006 11:01

rickman, thats great, thats really really great!

and well done to whoever is doing the shopping.

mustrunmore · 24/11/2006 11:04

I wish we could afford to give more than we are, partly for the selfish reason that I adore shopping, so I could 've purged myself of the need

Paddlechick666 · 24/11/2006 11:13

hazel, i drive a citroen berlingo so with the rear seats down it would be a van.

i can shift dd's car seat into the passenger seat.

jsut need someone who can store/distribute......

soapbox · 24/11/2006 11:20

Hazell - that is enormously helpful and kind

I will be in touch once we've arranged pick ups

I rather suspect my sisters' hands in all this- as they have been busy emailing likely companies to see whether they were able to donate

SO a big thanks to both of them too - they incidently have no children and have never been on MN before - but have just got as caught up as everyone else in making sure this Christmas is great!

I don't suppose someone could do me a big favour and post a thread asking about needing a 'man' with a van who can pick up from NW London and drop to me in Chislehurst Kent?

soapbox · 24/11/2006 11:30

Right girls (and boys) challenge for you!

We need to find someone who will distribute the trees etc for us!

I want you to get on your computers and start emailing all the main parcel and courier delivery companies

If you can write that MN has a large membership (several hundred thousand) link them into this thread and say we will run a thank the sponsors thread at the end of the campaign which they will be on

Go on then - what are you waiting for

OP posts:
hazell · 24/11/2006 11:32

Excellent I look forward to hearing from you - so pleased that we are able to help.

I also haven't been on Mumsnet before (anyway I'd need Grandmasnet!) - you are a very impressive bunch of ladies.

faeriemum · 24/11/2006 11:34

soapbox · 24/11/2006 11:38

Hazell - we have quite a few Grandmas on here - and we are a lovely bunch too

You would be more than welcome to stay and get to know us all better!

And you just must come back and hear from the mums that you helped to celebrate Christmas this year

OP posts:
FrivolentDemon · 24/11/2006 11:41

Gotta get DD - will do some emailing when I get back.

mummyhill · 24/11/2006 11:45

I am crying over the offer of christmas trees that is so nice.

As a reciever I would also Like to be able to thank my Christmas helper.

Berries · 24/11/2006 11:49

Soapy, thanks for the match. Have emailed you re:delivery as have rels in the area so could do presonal drop-off. This would remove anonymity though, so hoping you would know whether it was appropriate/appreciated. Keep up the good work!!

mummyhill · 24/11/2006 11:50

Is it easy to get hold of luncheon vouchers? They are accepted at most Iceland, Morrisons, Asda, tesc, Waitrose, Sainsbury's and somerfields.

mummyhill · 24/11/2006 11:51

I am now eagerly awaiting my match email so I can hopefully help someone else to have a better christmas this year.

It was such a relife when I realised that I could help as well as receive.
