I was amazed to open dd's school bag this afternoon and see a note from her teacher. It said something along the lines of

" Dear Parents,

Whilst we, as staff really appreciate your gifts at Christmas, this year we would like you instead to either contribute to or fill up a shoebox for our shoebox appeal."

I thought this was a lovely idea!!

I'd still give them a little something in addition to the shoebox contribution.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 07/11/2006 21:15

Great idea.

SSSandy · 07/11/2006 21:16

do you really ALL give the teacher a Christmas present? So they get 20-30 presents?

Here we have two parents elected per class as representatives and they collect a bit of money from the parents (really not much) buy a card and some flowers or something on behalf of the whole class. Never heard of anyone buying Christmas presents for the teachers here. Better ask admylin I think...

If I were a teacher I'd put

" Dear Parents,

Whilst we, as staff really appreciate your gifts at Christmas, this year we would like you instead to either contribute to or fill up a shoebox for our shoebox appeal. Alternatively, you could buy me some posh make up or some vouchers for shoes. The latter would be very well received"

moondog · 07/11/2006 21:19

Great idea.
It's so effing greedy to expect stuff.

I asked people for donations to school fund instead of pressies for dd's birthday this week and have managed to pass on a tidy sum.

DumbledoresGirl · 07/11/2006 21:21

One thing I don't miss about being a teacher is the stack of gifts I got at Christmas. Not that I didn't appreciate the thought, but it really isn't necessary and, apart from the chocolate which I guzzled, I can't remember a gift I really wanted - of course.

Give to the shoe box appeal and thank your lucky stars you don't have to think of something for them. The shoe box appeal is an excellent idea. My children's old school used to do it but their new one doesn't.

expatinscotland · 07/11/2006 21:21

Yeah, but moon, I like to give it!

I like buying stuff for people or finding stuff I think they'd like.

I dig it!

I do it all year.

I got the idea from one of my two best friends, Suzi.

Suzi kept her mum's ashes for about 7 years before we let her go. And during that time, if she came across something on the trail she thought her mum would like, she'd pick it up. Or write her a little note, or write down a quote she found that was cool.

It doesn't have to be expensive. Just something that's like, 'Hey, someone's thinking of you.'

But Lancome lipstick is cool.

DumbledoresGirl · 07/11/2006 21:23

But expat, as a teacher, can I let you know, parents more often than not get it wrong! You may think you know your child's teacher (you may even really know them, I don't know) but you probably don't! Give to the shoebox appeal - it is lovely and most teachers would support it over getting gifts for themselves.

I must find out what the rule is at DS1's new school. His teacher mentioned (in a not-dropping-hints sort of way) that she's allergic to chocolate ...

expatinscotland · 07/11/2006 21:25

A voucher, though, DG? You can't go wrong w/one of those cards from Boots, Sainsbury's, etc.

aweebitgross · 07/11/2006 21:28

Ah yeah, I'll still give her something, she's a lovely woman, and so is the TA It is a very small school, 10 in a class, so it would just be 10 gifts they would get anyway, but I think this is a good idea...

What do you have against it Malory?

I'll take a voucher anytime expat! I'll email you my address! But then, I am no longer teaching and am completely impoverished!

aweebitgross · 07/11/2006 21:32

But surely teachers get paid to teach

Not that I wouldn't buy a gift, I always have when dd was at playgroup, this is her first year at school

At my first school I used to get some fab presents from pupils

Can only imagine what my current clients/learners would give me know, lol!!!

Best idea I've heard all day. Nice to hear some schools are trying to channel gift money more usefully.

dmo · 08/11/2006 10:40

as a childminder i buy all the children i care for a present (normally for £10 each) for both christmas and birthdays (i have 17 children) i also buy flowers and beer from the children to their parents for mothers/fathers day

i have only ever received a present from one of the children i look after for christmas in the 4 yrs i,ve been doing this which i dont mind but the thing that does bother me is that nobody says thank you for the gifts i buy

TwinklingTinselAndTenaLady · 08/11/2006 10:48

Smashing idea, whats the point in the teachers receiving stuff they cant really utilise.

Gobbledispook · 08/11/2006 11:05

Malory you are on top form today!

I gave ds1's teacher a mini bottle of Moet last Christmas - come on, I'd LOVE that!!!
