DH wants tastefull colour co-ordinated tree and trimmings....we will have mishmash of all the lovely decs that the DDs have made over the last 6 years. What do you like?

I like the tree to look nice. All colour co-ordinated.
Within a few days it gets a bit messy as the dc knock baubles off and stick them anywhere!

CountTo10 · 06/11/2006 22:31

each year I choose a colour scheme (last year it was purple and silver) and then i include all the other bits I've been bought over the years or inherited or had made. Its a bit of a tradition that my mum buys me a little xmas dec each year that then appears on the tree the following year!! Plenty of tinsel and lametta for me!!!

nutcracker · 06/11/2006 22:32

I like mine to be co-ordinated, but I do put decorations on that the kids have made too.

Gobbledispook · 06/11/2006 22:32

Tasteful.

And, for me, that means no blue, pink, purple, silver or the like. Has to be the traditional red and gold or the wooden, Scandanavian type, decorations.

Gobbledispook · 06/11/2006 22:32

Oh yes, sorry, do put the kids' decs on.

hatwoman · 06/11/2006 22:35

I used to love doing different stylish ones each year - really put a lot of thought into it. now it's whatever the girls fancy. I had 5 or so grown up years doing it my way, and once they've grown up I'll do it again for many years (I allowed my mum to revert to stylish when I was about 25 I think, once the last child-hood bauble was smashed...). unstylish is a temporary blip. (although there are certain things I just won't buy, so I do exercise some control). I also carefully move all the decs upwards after the girls have gone to bed - though I got told off for this last year

I love a mish mash of memories.

A couple of years ago, ( I had left home) I arrived home to discover a "tasteful tree". , that is the vomit emoticon.

So I said to DM and DS, is this the way to go?, Oh yes sez they, fine sez I.

Can I take this old rubbish off your hands ??

10 years on, I have all the baubles we grew up with, some on their hip bones, never mind last legs.

DM came for Christmas, recently and spent ages going OOH I remember that, or Aaaaaaaaah I remember the year we bought that.

I am the custodian of Christmas past.

And I love it.

Chandra · 06/11/2006 22:39

Has anybody seen the black Christmas trees and decorations in stores this year? Too Adams family for my taste but wonder if they would become the "new black" of Christmas trees.

gigglinggoblin · 06/11/2006 22:39

last year dh and i sat on the sofa with a glass of mulled wine and the 6 and 5 yo decorated the tree while we watched. 'heap of tinsel' would best describe it, there was very little tree left showing but it was beautiful cos they put so much effort in. will prob do similar this year, will be interesting to see how their taste develops and how ds3 (now 2) will get involved

HenniPenni · 06/11/2006 22:41

My DM has decorations that I made,erm...30 something years ago that are still going strong, and, as myself and DdS trim her tree aswell hers is also a mishmash of love (although I suspect that once we've gone she "re-designs" the tree!)

Crikey chandra, I'd better not let my eldest daughter know that theres a black tree and decs available, she's going through a "I want to be a goth stage!"

OP posts:
Chandra · 06/11/2006 22:49

Oh well, she may love them, I saw one decorated with deep red feathers, and plenty of black baubles.

funnypeculiar · 06/11/2006 22:53

Silver gold and white ONLY, but mishmash of actual baubles/stuff, asn we buy new extra decs every year, if possible themed (eg silver kangeroo for the year we went to Oz in Dec)

Oh, and real candles (see other thread...)

HenniPenni · 06/11/2006 22:54

Deep red a no-no, it would have to be deep purple!!

OP posts:
Chandra · 06/11/2006 22:58

Oh my, is Deep Purple still around?????

CountessDracula · 06/11/2006 23:06

there is nothing as tasteless as a "tasteful" christmas tree

really truly

Smurfgirl · 06/11/2006 23:06

This year is my first ever year of having my own Chrismas tree so its going to be a vision in tasteful silvery blue colours!

When I got my first proper home with dh DM gave me half the Xmas tree decs and my Dsis the other half. They are amongst my most treasured possessions. Some were even made by my mum when she was a child - and she is 90 this year! Every year DH, DS and DD and I each choose one new decoration - just like we did when I was a child. So our Christmas Tree is a mass (or mess) of some old, some new, some funny, some poignant, some ghastly, some gorgeous. Every piece evokes memories for me. That and the smell of the tree is one of the highlights of Christmas. No 'taste' here!

MrsForgetful · 06/11/2006 23:31

what date do you all start putting up trees/decorations etc??

I wait till the 10th dec- cos my son has a birthday on 3rd dec....so i like to let him have a week before we start xmas

my neighbour has her window lights up now!

glitterfairy · 06/11/2006 23:57

I have a black tree at work with silver and white baubles. At home I have a joyous multi cloured tree with wonderful things on I have collected over the years in many colours. Glittery stars and angels and a hotair ballon, bells and brass ornaments and sparkly pink balls, a bunch of glittery grapes etc etc. I love all the colours and sparkle. Last year putting up the tree was very sad but this year I will be happy and joyous once more.

PinkTulips · 06/11/2006 23:58

starts out as one, ends up as the other!

PinkTulips · 07/11/2006 00:01

i love messy homely trees though, my mom still put the paper angel i made as a kid on top of hers, and put up the cardboard manger i made in kindergarten.

every time i start of with a lovely tastefully decorated tree and just can't resist putting more and more stuff on. last year every time dd spotted decorations in the shops i bought them for her and threw them on. was a nightmare when the lights went 2 days before xmas and the tree had to be stripped and redone!

twinsetandpearls · 07/11/2006 00:31

mostly tastefully decorated, although my gorgeus decorations that I collected in the years before children have not been out for years as they are too delicate and expensive. But as dd gets older and contributes more it is becoming full of homemade sentimental trash, last yeardd had her own tree in the playroom that she decorated with her offerings.
