I have had a look thru the thread list and can't see it - basically you get some oats and mix them with loose glitter (I like red and silver) - cut out a 15sm square of gingham/christmassy material (red gingham and red ribbon nice) and put in mixture - tie with little ribbon - do for just the family or sell at local toddler/playgroup/school - they all love it.

Tell them to sprinkle it on the garden/roof so the reindeers know where to land!

Cheap and easy - I made 50 last year for my playgroup and they sold instantly - sold them for 50p each - gave them the money for fundraising - but if you were doing a christmas fair yourself - then good money maker!

I got some of this for my DD's last year, but it was still there in the morning on the grass where they had thrown it !!!! ooops!!!

MerlinsBeard · 01/11/2006 19:45

what a lovely idea

It's great at our PTA Christmas fair - the bloke in the red suit has 'helpers' who give it out to all those who come to visit him.

We have a drunken night at someones' house making it!

just a quick comment I know its popular but alot of people r using art and craft glitter which is harmful to animals rather than the glitter that can be bought from cake shops which the birds and animals can eat without it harming them. Not being a killjoy as the idea is lovely and we have made it for quite a few years now but its worth a thought when u next make a batch.

MerlinsBeard · 01/11/2006 19:57

why not put it on your windowsills instead then? can be vaccummed that way!

SherlockLGJ · 01/11/2006 19:57

coloured sugar? how do u do that then? or can u buy it?

( i need a thick emoticon!)

FeelingOld · 01/11/2006 20:02

Sherlock - do you buy the coloured sugar or colour it yourself? I was give a recipe for 'reindeer food' but it said use oats and coloured sugar crystals but I cant find it anywhere.

SoupDragon · 01/11/2006 20:09

don't put glitter in it as that'll still be visible the nesxt morning. Sugar sparkles and dissolves int he dew.

Coloured sugar = food colouring plus sugar! I've done this and you have to crunch it up as the sugar sets in a clump but it works fine. I layer it into old babyfood jars for DSs, like those sand-in-a-bottle ornaments.

FeelingOld · 01/11/2006 20:26

Thanks soupdragon, I wasn't sure if food colouring would work but since its been tried and tested I'll use it in ours for our playgroup.

Furball · 01/11/2006 20:49

better to use bird food as well, that way the birds get some supper! and don't forget the poem.....

Sprinkle on the lawn at night
The moon will make it sparkle bright
As Santa's reindeer fly and roam
This will guide them to your home.

Soupy

I poured sugar into a very large freezer bag added colouring and then blew the bag up, gave a it a twist and then shook the sugar in the trapped air like buggery, and it worked a treat.

No clumping here >
