Ok, maybe christmas isn't ruined but I feel like crying, I rarely buy Florentines as they are so expensive ( fudges Florentines ) but as it is christmas I thought I would treat myself by doing my online shop at waitrose and buy myself some Florentines. My order has just arrived ( 2.5 hours late ) and they have substituted them for flapjacks Sad, the flapjacks do taste great but they are not Florentines Sad.

Rosy got my Florentines Angry

I do actually live quite near the Florentine factory, I could go there and maybe beg them for some?

Or I could try the farm shop down the road Smile.

Next year I'm going to go and get my shopping instead of being lazy doing it on line.

You should have gone to waitrose! I went last night and it was really quiet. Expecting it to be busy as was on my way home from work.

Only disaster was no Hendricks gin so having to make do with Plymouth. Shock

can I come on onto your thread and pull the 'you don't know you are born line?'

My kids are dairy, wheat and yeast intolerant, I am well used to making a pigs ear and presenting it like a silk purse and failing!!! I also live abroad and end up going from one shop to another to get 25% of what I actually came for!! There is no TK Maxx to get those things you only need once (pudding bowls) and no corner shop.

I drink a lot of wine to hide my frustrations and long for the day we can go out and eat McDonalds for dinner!!!

This year:
Christmas cake was missing treacle and dark brown sugar (as well as butter and actual gluten (ie glue, the stuff that actually holds cake together!!) so it's a bit crumbly and a bit pale!! I hope the icing will hold it all together and everyone will have drunk enough wine to not notice the actual cake!!

Christmas pudding is missing suet, a proper pudding basin, and the only thing that makes Christmas pudding good is brandy butter, does brandy olive olive butter substitute even remotely taste the same???

There is no stuffing, no way of making stuffing when all gluten free bread contains either corn or yeast, which are also not allowed and every things I have ever tried to make tastes like cardboard and making breadcrumbs from cardboard is a low I have yet to sink to!

We can't get bacon, so no pigs in bacon, my eldest would pee his pants if someone gave him bacon for Christmas!

I will roll out a few new untested recipes in an attempt to make mince pies, biscuits, cakes that are reasonably OK, 70% will taste like shit and make me cry, 25% will taste like shit to me and kids will say 'Well it's not the best thing I have ever tasted but you are the best Mummy in the world' and that will make me cry again and 5% will be something that costs a fortune, means I have to travel 40 miles to get the ingredients and takes 1.5 hours to make, I can make it again and will make again and again until they are so bored of eating it they will say, please Mummy, not that again, and I will cry again.

And to top it all, the latest analysis suggests that we need to exclude sugar, in which case, I might need to move to a desert island!!

Treacle it must be from Santa! Did you put Walnut cake on your letter to him this year?
Marne congrats on the florentines, I'll put the tree back up now I know Christmas is on Grin

mateysmum · 24/12/2014 09:32

What is a florentine

RawCoconutMacaroon · 24/12/2014 10:00

Anotherday, we have various food intolerances in the family and I follow a grain free diet... I can assure you fantastic stuffing can me made without gluten (and without any grains at all!).

You might find Marks Daily Apple online blog really helpful as a resource (it's a primal lifestyle blog, but the recipes are great for anyone avoiding the usual problem foods (no gluten, no grains, no soya, in any of the recipes, almost no dairy).

I've made fantastic stuffings with dates and pecans as the main ingredients, and meat stuffings very popular it this house too... :)

Sorry for the thread de-rail!

I really came on to say I don't trust anyone but me to do my shopping!!!

marne2 · 24/12/2014 10:23

I was in the shops by 8am hunting them down Grin

My dd has a gluten intolerance and I can't have too much dairy but some things are worth sitting on the loo all day for Smile there are some great gluten and dairy free recipes now, I. Sure most things are possible ( not quite the same as they are with gluten but still nice ), the sugar is a tricky one though Sad.

Stealth, they are nutty, crispy toffee, dried fruit and chocolaty goodness Grin, you must try one, we used to get giant ones from a local bakery when I was a kid, they used to be a lot more chewy than the fudges ones and were full of dried fruit and cherries.

So glad I read to the end as I now know what a Florentine is! They sound quite, Erm, ordinary. Are they a Xmas thing?

marne2 · 24/12/2014 10:49

Not really a christmas thing, I just can't justify buying them during the year as they are a bit pricey and are probably very high in sugar and fat ( back to the diet after Christmas ), they are the sort of thing that I would like to find in a christmas hamper. They are a luxury item Smile.
