Do you wrap everything?

I was thinking of keeping a few things unwrapped this year, my DD's Sven peeking out from behind presents... DD2's jack in the box set on top of a pile maybe... I thought it would look really festive and enticing Wink

DH disagrees and says everything must be wrapped... What do you think?

I wrap all except the stocking

DramaAlpaca · 18/12/2014 23:55

I've always wrapped absolutely everything. Unwrapping presents is part of the fun.

Iggity I think you're right about not wrapping being an Irish thing. DH's family didn't wrap, and his siblings families don't either. I'm English so I've imported the wrapping tradition for my DC.

callmekitten · 19/12/2014 03:22

We wrap everything except the stocking gifts. I do remember one year when DD was younger that I left a unwrapped doll on top of the pile of presents. I remember teasing her that the doll might be for me since it didn't have a tag on it. But then she unwrapped the box of supplies for caring for her "baby" and I had to admit it was for her.

MirandaWest · 19/12/2014 05:46

Everything gets wrapped including things for stockings. Although DS has a table tennis table which will be set up in thd garage and not sure how to wrap that up Xmas Grin

MirandaWest · 19/12/2014 05:46

Actually I lie, I don't wrap the satsuma at the bottom of the stocking.

DamselNotInHerDress · 19/12/2014 08:09

Everything gets wrapped here, apart from the Orange and chocolate coins in the stocking.

Mousefinkle · 19/12/2014 08:23

My dad used to put odd shaped things in a box before wrapping so I wouldn't have a clue what it was Grin. I tend to do the same now for DC but only because it looks neater and is easier to wrap.

I've had years where I've left bigger things unwrapped because it seemed pointless bothering and I couldn't be arsed like one of those wooden activity cube one year... It did look quite festive and sweet.

Not everything. We don't wrap stocking fillers or things like scooters, bikes etc or things like kitchens. We just get lots of those long curly ribbon bows and stick them on. We also don't do tags. Our children can recognise my very distinctive hand writing. Doesn't matter how much I try to change it. So for that reason they have their own colour instead! All ribbons always have to be in their individual colour! And we usually wrap one child's presents in one paper and another's in a different paper. All other presents get wrapped, despite the size and weird angles!

SusannahD · 19/12/2014 08:45

Yep another one for wrapping everything, I use a special paper for presents from father christmas.

NorksEnormous · 19/12/2014 09:10

Iggity I'm from Ireland too, and have never wrapped! I think you are right about it being a location thing

unlucky83 · 19/12/2014 09:18

I wrap everything except massive things when Santa tells me they need to leave out a sheet. - So sledges, bean bags etc. And I don't wrap their tiny things in their 'stockings' - hair bobbles etc which are actually one of my socks (mens and big feet)...
However as someone said upthread I remember getting my teddy for christmas 41 yrs ago when I was 6 - all our presents were in white carrier bags -my younger brothers got big teddies too -slightly smaller than mine - and the carrier bags were on the sofa with the teddies sticking out the top - and mine was in the middle. So maybe not wrapping somethings is a good idea...

ohtheholidays · 19/12/2014 09:21

5DC and I've wrapped everything including all the stocking fillers, teachers and TA's presents. We have a massive family as well. Also wrapped all the presents for youngest DD's class.I have wrapped nearly 300 things.I never want to see wrapping paper ever again.

I think your idea sounds lovely. Xmas Smile

SookyBunny · 19/12/2014 09:26

I'm Scottish and presents from Santa were never wrapped when I was wee and they're never wrapped now!

ohtheholidays · 19/12/2014 09:27

DH has also managed to find wrapping for youngest DS13 bike. It's a big Christmas cover that you pull the end on so it incases the bike. But to give him his due he bought from a pound shop.Xmas Grin

ohtheholidays · 19/12/2014 09:28

It's a big*

Kaekae · 19/12/2014 09:29

Yes wrap everything, bikes I put loads of ribbons on it and place all other presents around it. I don't do stocking presents anymore, waste of time for us.

DontCallMeBaby · 19/12/2014 13:04

I wrap everything, including stocking presents - I like a bit of wrapping, and we have a small family so there's not a huge amount to do. I'll probably chuck the popping candy Freddo I just bought into the stocking unwrapped though, and the cello stand DD's getting this year is probably my upper limit for size of wrapped present. If she ever gets an actual cello of her own for Xmas I won't be wrapping that!

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 19/12/2014 13:10

Wrap everything. Obviously father Christmas has different wrapping paper to us. Actually, he has really bad taste - last year it was Disney princesses, and this year it's Frozen. I'd never buy that tat. Wink

unlucky83 · 19/12/2014 14:03

I have special wrapping paper from Santa - I keep it hidden. And each DC has their own paper - not necessarily one kind - means they can never get them mixed up before unwrapping or when I put them out (I don't label them).
I do think it isn't very environmentally friendly - even though it goes to be recycled. I do save big bits and reuse it the next year for smaller presents the following year...maybe even for more than one year
For presents from DH and I to each other I reuse paper - I have some that is at least 15 yrs old - only maybe not used for the odd year as too small etc...
I think if I'd thought about when the DCs were younger I would have invested in cloth/reusable wrapping but seeing as they nearly don't believe in Santa anymore and when they don't the volume will go right down it isn't worth it ...
If I had toddlers I would seriously think about it...

GodRestYeMerrySlatterns · 19/12/2014 15:12

Oh yes, another one here for special wrapping paper from Santa. I also don't label, one colour/theme paper for DD and another for DS.

MrsCakesPrecognition · 19/12/2014 15:17

Wrap it all.
If it is a distinctive shape then disguise it in the wrapping. One year I gave my DDad an omlette pan (which he had especially asked for even though I thought it was a bit boring). I slid an empty toblerone box over the handle and taped another one to the opposite side, then wrapped the whole lot in bubble wrap and festive paper. Silly but it made us laugh.

Whatthequack · 20/12/2014 00:33

Another one from Northern Ireland, my presents were never wrapped as a child, and no one I knew ever had their presents wrapped. This is my first year wrapping presents for DS7, as well as having a stocking. It will be interesting to see how he reacts. (I kind of suspect he would prefer them without the paper, as he is rather impatient). I am also starting to regret wrapping them, as I am used to laying the presents out accordingly, sort of like my own little toy window display.

GodRestYeMerrySlatterns · 20/12/2014 00:41

Just to buck the trend, I'm from NI and I'm a wrapper Smile. I honestly can't remember what my Mum did, but will ask her tomorrow.

apotatoprintinapeartree · 20/12/2014 00:49

If it doesn't move it gets wrapped, every last thing, big or small.
This year have gone to town with bows, ribbon, tags etc.

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 20/12/2014 00:55

I can't imagine the presents not wrapped!? I mean the odd thing, sure, but all of them?!

Isn't it weird, you just assume everyone does what you do and what's in films/on TV. I've never heard of not wrapping any presents. How did I get to 40 and not realise this is a 'thing' in some places.

A bit like watching a film tonight and he took monopoly to her house to play...it was 'American'. 'American' monopoly?? (Yes, lots of 'novelty' ones I know, Star Wars etc, but a 'proper' one, but American?). Just Not Right!
