Or did MN decide it was unnecessary? Inspiration needed, nothing too complicated as it's complicated enough already!

Lobster and smoked salmon mousse with cucumber dressing - makes a little lobster go a long way and absolutely delicious too.

Fondue I think, Jamie Oliver recipe which includes cider. Serve with raw veg and toasted French bread.

We're hosting next year and I've already decided to make a ham hock terrine. DH doesn't like seafood or pâté and I don't like melon (or pear or the earlier idea would have been great) which rules our most starters.

The 8yo asked for gravlax so that what we'll have. Also got some lumpfish caviar, crayfish tails and pickled herring. May well pick up some crab and other fishy things next week.
Do like the look of the lobster mouse up threaded may do that at New Year.
For year's at my parents we had poached salmon tail and buttered wheaten bread. We've tended to keep starters light and pear, blue cheese and walnut salad with loads of little gem had been a bit of a staple.

I'll eat sausages in bacon while I'm cooking, everyone else can have chocolate!

Ohhh god, i think the starters sound much better than the mains; so sophisticated and classy and delicious! I need to consult with everyone else in the christmas household on this important issue, but if it were up to me i'd love some kind of hot dish involving big prawns, as described by PPs. But I know this will be vetoed by DM as too faffy.

Although, to those having chocolate and booze; I also like your style; these will be an aperitif prior to starter at ours!
