I am providing a cheese board as part of Christmas lunch at friends. I would like to put together a wonderful feast of cheese as someone else is cooking and hosting.

Can you tell me your must have's or recommendations.
I will source cheese from an independent or local grocer, but would love to be armed with a list

We're having:

Stichelton
Keens Cheddar
Reypeneer VSOP 2 year old Gouda
Red Wine Farmer
Petit Munster
Kidderton Ash Goat
Truffled Camembert

I also have a sweet almond & fig relish and medlar jelly at the ready. I love cheese so much.

CheeseBuster · 16/12/2014 11:30

Camembert NOT Brie. Very important.

CheeseBuster · 16/12/2014 11:32

Oh msrinky please share where you get your truffled Camembert? My local cheese monger has stopped doing it Sad

thinkfast · 16/12/2014 11:34

Pooh I love sloppy, strong Brie, Camembert, Roquefort, a lovely creamy goats and a strong sheeps cheese

Can anyone suggest some delicious, strong, pasteurised cheeses ie suitable for enjoying in pregnancy please?

MsRinky · 16/12/2014 12:00

Got mine from Costco this year, as my independent didn't have any either! I'm sure I've also seen it in Waitrose though.

Oldraver · 16/12/2014 19:59

Delice de Bourgogne...I'm hopefully picking up a whole one on Thursday

321zerobaby · 16/12/2014 20:01

Apricot stilton. Not keen on any others, would much rather have dessert.

KatherinaMinola · 16/12/2014 20:47

Sage Derby - it's a traditional Christmas cheese too.

Agree 4-5 good ones rather than lots of little bits.

iwantavuvezela · 17/12/2014 13:44

Thanks again for all the lovely recommendations. Katherineminola I agree, I will get 4-5 decent ones rather than too many little ones. Off to write list from this thread to take cheese shopping. Yum.

I just sampled some Stichleton at my local farmers' market - AMAZING! Basically a raw Stilton (sorry, pregnant people Hmm) I'm going to get half a kilo for Xmas cheese consumption!

An aged Comte is also wonderful - quite like a mature Parmesan.

Izzy24 · 17/12/2014 14:16

Never met a cheese I didn't like .

But the irresistible one is the little black bomber.

railwayworker · 17/12/2014 21:09

I'm considering:

Vignotte
Smoked Staffordshire organic
Cornish Yarg
Ramhall Ewe

and another?

I like cheese but don't know a huge amount about it, any comments on the list above?

Sidge · 17/12/2014 21:14

I've got a bit of a thing for Castello Blue at the moment - it's divine.

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 18/12/2014 08:52

good ideas here! All I've thought of so far is some brie & stilton...

Would love to get hold of some smoked blue wensleydale again, twas delicious when MIL brought some back from their holiday to Yorkshire Smile

duckbilled · 18/12/2014 12:39

I love a giant oozy Gorgonzola, white Stilton, goats cheese, Jarlsberg, a sharp cheddar and a something smoked.... But I love all cheese!!

Purplecircle · 18/12/2014 13:06

Railwayworker you probably need a fruity or a crumbly to go with those

White Stilton or Wensleydale maybe?

ChocolateWombat · 18/12/2014 13:13

Love a good cheese board.

I think 3 cheeses is usually enough.

personally like;
Cornish yarg
Goats cheese
A flavoursome local cheddar

At this time of year, love a cranberry Wensleydale or apricot Stilton, although husband says the fruit defiles the cheese. He loves a very stinky blue cheese which requires several layers of plastic bags and a pot with a strong lid to keep the smell contained.

RojaGato · 18/12/2014 16:01

Rocquefort. A wee drizzle of honey can really set if off. (On honeymoon I had a pudding that was Roquefort, white chocolate ganache/mousse, black olive powder and honey. Was amazing. )

Vintage cheddar. A really sharp, tangy one.

Caboc. The richest, creamiest double yum ever. Imagine clotted cream was a cheese.

Lovelydiscusfish · 18/12/2014 18:06

My all time favourite cheese is Oxford Blue.

emeline · 18/12/2014 18:10

Manchego. It's wonderful.

Bumdance · 22/11/2015 17:26

Bumping this because it has some good suggestions so seemed silly to start a new thread. Just wondered if anyone had any feedback on appenzeller?

PurpleTreeFrog · 22/11/2015 17:41

Appenzeller is lovely. I have Swiss family so I say this with authority Smile

Here are the official rules of cheese boards... A proper cheese board must contain:

  1. something old
  2. something new
  3. something goat
  4. something blue

(Old and new means hard and soft)

That pretty much covers it!

Bumdance · 22/11/2015 17:47

Thanks Purple is appenzeller anything like anything else? Texture wise or taste wise? I can and will go into the cheese shop and ask for a taste but am enjoying making my list! It looks emmantal like in texture, is that right?

Strawclutching · 22/11/2015 17:50

Benleigh blue is delicious!

MrsBertMacklin · 22/11/2015 17:56

I'm intrigued about the withdrawn message up thread, imagining someone with a cheeseboard so specific it outed them.

Cheddar with salt crystals in it. Epoisses.

Agree with Caboc.
