I am having 1st christmas in a news home, not sure what would look right - but just decided on a Scottish/lodge type decor theme for this christmas, DD suggested it- she is inspired. I love the whole pine cone/tartan/stag deer thing trend atm.
I have seen tartan table runner and have loads of pine cones. We are having relatives from abroad spending their forst christmas in a cold country- so now I cant wait.
Do you have a theme?

My theme is sparkly shit.

It evolves year on year and is helped along by my 3 children picking a new decoration each at the beginning of December when we have a garden centre, hot chocolate and cake morning.

It's lovely really, especially looking back on what they've picked in previous years and knowing that when they (eventually) leave home they can take their choices with them (if they want to!)

Guitargirl · 22/11/2014 20:24

We don't usually have a theme, unless 'it looks as though a reindeer threw up in here' could be considered a theme Xmas Grin

But this year I am decorating the kitchen in a Frozen theme. Very excited about that.

I solved the problem of the "kid effect" 2 years ago. They each have a tree for their bedroom , £10 from Tesco, and they can put whatever they like on it. Thus leaving the visible trees free for me to co ordinate as I like. They (DCs) are very happy with this arrangement.

My main tree is red, coloured stuff and gold. My other tree is entirely silver.

Both of them look great but in entirely different ways.

Other than that I wouldn't say there is a theme as such.

CoolStoryBro · 22/11/2014 20:27

My tree is always white lady guts and white and silver baubles. No theme just stuff collected over the last 18 years.

CoolStoryBro · 22/11/2014 20:28

Wtf?! Lady guts?!! My iPhone has a mind of its bloody own!

everydayaschoolday · 22/11/2014 20:29

Scandinavian - red and white. I got hearts and stars baubles, and other cute reduced red/white items, on sale from dotcomgiftshop. www.dotcomgiftshop.com/christmas-decorations-sale?ll=menulink

Interested to hear of Guitargirl's Frozen theme kitchen…. Flowers

Guitargirl · 22/11/2014 20:46

everyday - I have been planning it for a while!

Arctic blue fabric with silver snowflakes to hang in the window with white snowflake lights to hang behind it and white and blue sparkly snowflake window stickers. Frozen themed ribbon to tie back our cream curtains. Turquoise and blue paper pom-poms for the ceiling and silver snowflake train for the ceiling. Snowflakes to hang in the doorway and blue icicle lights. Snow covered tree and Olaf, Ana and Elsa tree decorations. Table top white lit-up twig tree with set of 12 mini frozen decorations to hang on it. Turquoise tablecloth and silver snowflake table runner. Blue and silver sequinned bunting. Small cuddly Olaf, Sven, Ana and Elsa to sit on kitchen chairs. Am also planning frozen themed breakfast for December 1st with ideas from Pinterest.

Guitargirl, Poundland have packs of 3 paper snowflakes that would be fab for a frozen themed room.

everydayaschoolday · 22/11/2014 21:50

That sounds lovely Guitargirl thank you for sharing. I think I'm inspired to plan a bit more for our kitchen/diner.

WreckTheHalls · 22/11/2014 22:07

Nooooooo. Nour only theme is 'Christmas' Grin

We add a few new baubles for the tree each year to add to a collectin I've been building up for ten years, since our first DC was born, so its a real mish mash of styles.

The kids make loads of decorations in the first week of Dec - paper chains etc - in all sorts of naff colourful and sparkly materials, which we hang up everywhere.

I cut loads of holly off our bush and string lights everywhere.

Thats us.

Have never bought into Christmas home furnishings. I dont like them at all.

WreckTheHalls · 22/11/2014 22:07

*our only theme!

LoblollyBoy · 22/11/2014 22:38

I might just add one of my hugely controversial opinions to this thread. You should have one tree only. Not looking at you in particular slattern.

OverAndAbove · 23/11/2014 08:08

Our theme is the same as always - "Less is not More". There will be a lot of stuff. Test said, when considered individually the stuff is all quite naice and tasteful, so it kind of looks ok.

I'm quite excited thinking about it

Arlagirl · 23/11/2014 08:11

Well I believe in minimalism so my only concession to decorations is a real tree..silver decs... And a wreath on the door.
Nothing else.
I hate cards on display, Xmas themed cushions and tinsel.
And it comes down NY Day and I fill the house with daffodils and tulips.

This year is the first I am having a tree. DS's first Christmas.

I am really trying not to have a colour scheme - I think it really restricts you plus my mum has always had a tree where anything goes and it's absolutely beautiful every year.

I have OCD so I'm trying not to get obsessed with particular colours!

AliceinWinterWonderland · 23/11/2014 09:08

We don't really have a "theme" either. It's just whatever we like. I have always edged more towards the tartan stuff so there are some that I've had and used for years. Loads of things the dcs have made. I like to decorate throughout the house. I used to string lights outside and have a massive lights display going in the states, but here in the UK not so much. First of all no outside outlet. Grin And I'm not going to dangle a power cord out the window.

The dcs (5 and 8) have been told that they can fully orchestrate the decorations this year upstairs (within reason obviously - they are not bringing in live reindeer - that's already been brought up and vetoed!!), and help with the downstairs decorations.

wfrances · 23/11/2014 10:09

dining room - skandi
living room -winter white
rest of the house traditional -wreaths,warm lights, garlands along staircase
poinsiettas ect

SilentAllTheseYears · 23/11/2014 10:12

Whatever we like - the tree and assorted decorations are a real hotpotch since most of them are handmade by the 3 DCs at various nurseries and schools.
