It needs to be light weight, assembled and around £100. Does anyone have any ideas?
Halfords do assemble th for you but don't have a great range. The weight is the key factor here, his current bike is really heavy (not sure how heavy though) and it makes it hard to cycle up hills, making him lose interest. It was a hand me down so I feel ok about replacing it!

Yes, if it has 20" wheels buy the ridgeback. The decathlon one sounds light enough - if that weight is for 20" wheels it is lighter than the Ridgeback.

It's 16" wheels which is the right size for his age and size! even if he grows out of it in a year hopefully I can get a bit back from it on eBay and save my pennies for an Isla next Christmas! Ok I'm doing it.

Both of the ones I was looking at were 16" wheels not 20". He's only just 6 and small for his age so I thought go for the 16" for now? Most size guides say 120cm plus for 20" and he's around 110.

Ah, I see sorry just saw the islabike 20 bit.

Buy the ridgeback :)

Thank you all so much! That was really helpful. I didn't know where to start! I'm happy that I've got something decent and at a good price that I can sell on when the time comes, they are on eBay for £50-100 second hand. Can I add it to my home insurance do you know?

Yes you can :) Well done, Ridgebacks are great wee bikes!

BikeRunSki · 08/11/2014 22:02

That seems like a good deal if you are sure it's the right size. How is it delivered? Be prepared for it to come without pedals attached, for the handlebars to be turned through 90 degrees and the brakes may not be connected.

My 6 yr old DS has a Ridgeback it's a great bike. Not quite as light as Islabikes but a lot cheaper. We have it on our house insurance. I think it was about 20 to have a number of bikes of up to 500 on there.
If you want to know what his current bike weighs, then weigh yourself on scales, then hold the bike and reweigh.

VivaLeBeaver · 08/11/2014 22:45

Check what the excess on the policy is? If you have to pay the first £80 it may not be worth insuring. Plus small print normally says the bike has to be locked with a gold category D bike lock when not in use. The bike locks are £50 each amd heavy.

He's not likely to leave it unsupervised anyway I guess. It says assembly instructions included so I assume it will be in bits to some degree. I'm sure it's the right size, every site says 16" for his age and height.
Thank you!

I think it will be the right size - my ds was 10cm taller on his 6th birthday when he got the 20" Ridgeback. But you will probably only get a year out of it!

WeAllHaveWings · 09/11/2014 09:04

I'd go to local bike shop and try out for size before ordering online (our bike shop was cheaper than online and assembled/checked/kept until Xmas eve). Pretend to ds you are just passing/looking

RockySpeed · 09/11/2014 09:08

We've just bought a specialized hotrock 16" second hand from ebay for £80

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 09/11/2014 09:12

I've bought the bike! I don't really have time to go to bike shops. I will get DS dad to put the bike together:)
