Magna tiles?

I was considering asking mil to get ds (5) some wooden blocks but now I'm looking at Magna tiles instead.
Mil usually spends around £100 but they do look very expensive for what you get.

Does anyone have them? The reviews are all great but I worry ds would be that 1% of children that isn't interested in them! Mind you could sell on on ebay I suppose. Probably hold value. I'd like to try them first really!

I keep seeing these but have not bought any ( so not much help ), I would be tempted to go for lego or Knex, both are very well made and you can keep adding to them as the child gets older. Lego gets played with everyday in our house.

Ds has loads of Polydrons here which are similar but bigger and look far more sturdier than magna tiles. As a young boy he loved them and has kept them for "memories". From what I remember they were pretty expensive but he played with them for years and any children who come here love them.

I have bought then for DS's main present on recommendation of a friend in the US- they are much more common out there I gather. I don't know anyone with any to try but trust my friends judgment on a 'good toy' and hope DS likes it! He does generally like small things he can fidget with ( though he's only 2) and is fascinated by the magnets that link his brio trains together so I am optimistic.

These are amazing! We are in California and they are the present to have here. My three year old plays with them at preschool and adores them. I am equally keen, you can build huge towers or intricate houses for their figures to play inside. Really easy to use and very imaginative. They are one of th few toys I enjoy playing with.
We are also getting Grandma to buy them. There are lots of cheaper ones out there though, I think we are going for the Picasso ones, which are basically the same. My friend has the Picasso ones and my DS can't tell the difference.

Oh and we have Lego and Knex, but Magna tiles are much more flexible, I've seen the kids building really intricate pyramids and then taking out tiles to make windows etc. And my friend with the Picasso set has a DS7, DD3 and both enjoy plying with this - they don't normally play that well together so worth it for that.

Thanks for the Picasso tip GinIsCalling. I have been looking at these for ages but have always been put off by the price of the magnatile brand.

Oh good - I've ordered the 100 piece set. I hope he likes it! But if I find he doesn't use it much it will probably hold it's value and we could sell it on. It is a risk!
