No one here likes turkey, what meat will you be opting for/ what are you doing with it? :)

Lovely my dad's a gamekeeper so I get given pheasant too. He knows someone who smokes it and it's delicious Smile

70isaLimit Try This moroccan spiced filo pie. It's delicious and looks special enough for C day but is not too difficult.

I rebelled against turkey for years but in the last two I have submitted and discovered that I like a traditional christmas dinner to my enormous surprise. What I like most of all about turkey is the next day (and the next and the next)!!

Pink we definitely only have one meat too! But then again there's only usually 3 of us to feed. We went to relatives house for Boxing Day dinner last year and there were 18 of us; we had chicken, beef, lamb and pork!

Beef, possibly a rib, this year. I'vd never done beef at Christmas before. Quite looking forward to it.

In previous years we've done pheasant, partridge and quail. Last year was turkey. Even when we don't do turkey, I'll cook a ham and a chicken sometime after 22nd, just for the leftover dishes!

I'll be doing Delia's Turkey Roulades with Pork, Sage and Onion Stuffing - I've done them a few times and it is so much easier to serve up than carving a huge turkey and much juicier and tastier too.

Goose for us. Oh, and a gammon for boxing day.

DH stores the goose fat for months to make roast potatoes.

Since we have turkey at Thanksgiving, we have something different at Christmas.

Our tradition is Iowa Ham Balls. I've tried to change things up a couple of times & suggested other dishes, but the family pitches fits so I always end up fixing them.

Mhm, beef sounds like it might be triumphing here..
What cut/ how much will I need to feed 5 big appetites?
Do you recon it would work out cheaper to buy it early and freeze it before the Christmas rush? :/

Prefer chicken to turkey, we had a stuffed duck from sainsbury's last year that was quite nice, I don't like loads of meat though, prefer to fill up on nice, crispy roasties and other accompaniments.

The dc prefer beef so might go with that this year even though it's not really traditional, but I get to have yummy Yorkshires :)

well, we have sirloin on Christmas Day - it cooks quickly and its easy to carve - 3-4lb will give you plenty for cold beef sandwiches another day :) I do rib of beef quite a lot during the year- the taste is fabulous, but there is a lot of fat, and its not so easy to cut up - I usually ask for 1 rib of beef for 2 people , which is generous, so you could get away with 2 ribs - sorry I don't know what that would weigh ( I have an old fashioned butcher and he just puts his knife at a point and says "about here?" Grin. Also - good beef will keep for quite a long time - my butcher hangs it for at least 3 weeks before selling, so another few days don't hurt, but I've never frozen it

We have a stuffed duck and a Fillet Of Beef usually. I am thinking about a Rib Of Beef instead.

Oldraver · 06/11/2014 12:23

ouyve I have bought deboned stuffed duck in the past from M+S and Waitrose.... I stopped a few years ago as they both had been stuffed with Cherries and I wasnt keen on that mixture. The last three years I have deboned the duck myself (not hard took even me 20 mins) and stuffed with an apricot and almond and a cranberry stuffing in layers.

To those wondering about multi meets..... we started adding beef to the mix as OH doesn't like duck... I buy a 1-2lb Fillet and we have it as steaks on Boxing Day as well
