I refuse to buy DD a branded doll! -

I just wanted to get some other mums opinions. My DD is just 3. And I've noticed she's starting to succumb to TV advertising and recognises the hideous baby born and baby annabel adverts, which I find a bit disconcerting. Esp as I already imposed a 'no Barbie' ban on our house as soon as she was born. I am not anti-pink, or anti-doll, but I make sure DD has a good selection of toy cars and non-gender specific toys. However we do have a 'fashion' doll in the house and 3 cabbage patch kids. But I just feel that baby born, baby annabel and barbie are more of a brand - and a financial con (have you seen the price of baby annabel outfits?).

DD is more than happy to play with her ELC pram with a teddy in it or one of her other dolls and happily sits them down to eat or pretend to change them, and all her accessories have been gathered from various places, some second hand, without thought to brand etc.

I know when she gets to to school and hears what other little girls have I will probably have to have a rethink. But at the moment I feel if she is happy with the toys she's got why step into the breach and get all this heavy branded stuff.

My friend and Godmother thinks I am depriving her, and has hinted that her DD's have chosen a barbie present for DD for Christmas. Also MIL has asked if she can get some of this stuff. I have said a firm no to both parties, and suggested other less costly but more (I feel) appropriate things -besides it would all be similar to what she has already.

Am I being a meanie mummy?

FatThighs · 11/11/2006 17:06

I do think you have a valid point and an interseting thread has followed. I too do not think you need to chill - you are concerned re: your dd development - I think that's important.

Twiglett · 11/11/2006 17:08

sorry but baby born, baby annabel and barbie are brnads and cabbage patch kids aren't??

I agree with you btw .. you get your children the toys YOU feel comfortable with .. that is why I also have a Barbie ban .. but then DD only 2.6 so can get away with it .. but I feel Barbie is an inherently bad representation of anything female from the dimensions of her to the horrible pinkness and accessories

FrannyandZooey · 11/11/2006 17:10

I think redlorry has gone, this is a Lazarus thread

I liked my post btw

Twiglett · 11/11/2006 17:14

sorry but that link for Myriad Natural Toys .. have you actually looked at the roughly hewn figures ..I clicked into fairytale figures ... they might be attractive but their play value is minimal .. no moving parts? no tactile differences? .. how sad if that's the only kind of toy a child has

Twiglett · 11/11/2006 17:15

"A Lazarus thread" .. franny you're making me laugh recently

still lovin' the 'sticks out elbows' comment

Yes, thank you Boris.

You are clearly a woman of impeccable taste

FatThighs · 11/11/2006 18:55

okay I may be a bit slow on the uptake but what is a 'lazarus' thread (flew too close to the sun or a minotaur or something - ekk - brainache)

I did a search on BABEE ANABEL as am getting for my dd - this thread came up and I forgot was old so replied - thus bumping it up - sorry not current, but very entertaining.

rustybear · 11/11/2006 19:27

Lazarus was raised from the dead, Icarus flew too close to the sun

FatThighs · 11/11/2006 19:42

oh - I will go and sit inthe corner with a dunces cap on.

Blondilocks · 11/11/2006 19:48

You can have the baby born & not buy any outfits. My LO has baby born & baby annabel & she is happy to dress them in any outfits.

Gillian76 · 11/11/2006 20:14

I don't agree with advertising to children. But if I take my daughter into a toy shop and she likes the look of Baby Born for example, I have no problem with buying it for her. I am not buying cos she's being exploited by the company, I'm buying it because she likes it and will have fun playing with it. What's the harm?
