Is this M&S hamper really worth £1000?!?

Was looking through the M&S Christmas food catalogue and couldn't understand how all this food and drink could add up to £1k?!? Sheer madness to me!

A few bottles of plonk? Blimey.

Surely real booze connoisseurs would be after artisanal bollocks from Harrods or something, rather than our nation's finest purveyor of pants?

There's about 40 items on the list and while one or two are bottles of bubbly, there are also packets of diamond encrusted biscuits and gold plated jars of jam. Does it come with the services of a butler for the entire holidays?

One of mine and DH's favourite activities in the run up to Christmas is trying to guess the price of M&S hampers . We take it in turns to read out the list of contents and the other person tries to tot it up.

We never underestimate the price, in spite of years of estimating experience.

I once won a Christmas hamper with champagne, luxury cheeses, whiskey, brandy, lots of wine, lots of luxury chocolates - huge (about a metre long wicker basket)

I thought they added one too many zero's before clicking your link. But definitely no mistake there at the cost.

There's 15 bottles of alcohol in it (3 red, 3 white, 1 brandy, 1 port, 2 champagne, 4 sparkling wine, 1 gin)

There are also chocolates, biscuits, cake, pudding, jams, tea, coffee, fruit, olives, peaches, honey, chutneys, oil, vinegar, cranberry sauce.

Not saying I'd buy it, or even want it (why in God's name do they still include tea and jam in hampers?), but it is M&S, and there is a lot of stuff in the hamper.

But it's a THOUSAND POUNDS

It's delivered with a personal message, which is presumably 'I am considerably richer than yow'

To be fair, the three wicker trunks probably make up a couple of hundred quid.

I worked out how much the alcohol price came to and it was about £300, so no I certainly don't think that it is worth what they are charging.

That's actually disgusting. Just buy the stuff separately (not necessarily from M&S either) and put it all in a nice box. Presumably this is for people with more money than sense time who think impersonal, expensive gifts are the way to go. Just, no.

If you were rich enough to spend £1k on a hamper you'd buy one from F&M or Harrods surely, not M&S?!??

I'm intrigued now. How much would a Harrod's one cost with similar stuff? I'm assuming M & S have actually done some marketing for this.

Even if they don't sell and they reduce them by 75% in the after Christmas sale I still wouldn't be tempted.

I wonder if they expect not to sell many, but do it to make their cheaper () hampers appear to be more reasonably priced.
