Would love to make gingerbread houses with the dc this year but which kits are any good?

Is the Lakeland one really worth £12.99?

The Morrisons £4.99 one is fantastic.

Agree the morrisons one is fab. We really enjoyed making it last year and definitely buying again.

I bought the ikea one and the john Lewis one last year..

The ikea one broke as I was getting it out of the box. The John Lewis village was brilliant.

We got a lidl one last year, was about £4, stuck together really well & more than enough icing to stick on loads of sweets too. I didnt think much to the sweets included though (hard candy type) so bought some others.

They all do the job OK IMO but lots aren't that good to eat. The trick with the building is to make the icing really, really stiff.

Making the gingerbread yourself is really easy, you just need to make some rectangle templates out of card to cut out the pieces. That's the way we always do it now and as well as the fun of building it, DC get to choose the sweets and the design and it gets eaten too.

I love the lidl one as it's really big, thick pieces of gingerbread. The ikea one snapped really easily.

Guitarghoul · 29/10/2014 21:26

We made 2 ikea ones last year which both worked fine.

We have the John Lewis village this year.

We've had the Aldi one, quite easy to put together, make the icicng with egg white.

DS did have to take a hammer to it it was so strong

nic013 · 29/10/2014 22:39

It's good fun to make them from a template. I crush up boiled sweets and sprinkle them on the windows and they make great stained glass

starlight1234 · 29/10/2014 22:40

We love them make one every xmas ever and have it for breakfast christmas day...not the whole thing obviously.

My Top tip would be to buy extra icing. We buy a tube it makes it easier for DS.

You can make mini houses from rectangle biscuits

attheendoftheday · 30/10/2014 09:18

Ikea one worked fine for us last year. Love the biscuit tip nic thank you.
