What to buy dc2 when we already have everything from dc1?!

DS is 8 and DD is 2. We already have a train set, a doll's house, a farm, tractor, animals, trucks, dinosaurs, tea set, rocking horse, hobby horse, dolls, pushchair, jigsaws, books, a castle, a pirate ship, a bus, a rocket, duplo, lego, potato head, doctors set, dinky cars, a tool kit, baking set.

What do we buy dd?! Most of the things we got ds were sturdy wooden toys that are still in great condition and have been passed on to dd. I don't want to buy her things for the sake of it but at the same time she has to have something to open on xmas morning. Plus all our big family will be asking for suggestions of things to buy her!

Our ideas so far are: Dressing up stuff, balance bike, Nice doll's pram, gardening stuff.

What do you think?

I think those are good ideas and that would be plenty for me. Also books and craft stuff because there will be new better products of those around, and you can't have too many books imo. My 2 yo dd loves her play tent too!

More "stuff" for the dolls, such as high chair, bath etc.

Wildpoppies · 25/10/2014 00:13

My friend is youngest of three and says get younger children personalised things so they know it is theirs and older siblings won't steal it.

My favourite shop at money is online shop Bramble Rose as they embroider names onto dolls etc

39steppesmum · 25/10/2014 00:29

we have lots of shared toys, but my kids especially no 3 really like to have things which belong to them.

So one way we got round it was to buy a lovely new engine for the wooden railway which was HERS, or a new car for the car box which was HERS and so on. We really didn't need any more cars, but she loves the fact that one or two are hers.

Similarly, at age 2 she won't care about price, so you could use some of it to buy things for her bedroom, clothes etc.

great (if you will do it with her) is a set of paints - I mean posts of ready mix poster paint, pad of large paper, selection of brushes in different sizes.

Playdough rollers and cutters (ELC do a nice pizza set, it is nice because the big circle cutter and roller etc are nice solid tools - bit pricey for what it is though)

Also, if ds is 8, put away stuff he has grown out of, and bring it out again for dds birthday/christmas

herecomesthsun · 25/10/2014 05:08

dance lessons and suitable outfit if you think she'd like that?

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 25/10/2014 05:23

Play Kitchen or Shop?

shoppingbagsundereyes · 25/10/2014 07:02

Do you have Happyland? The best toys in the world for age 18m to about 4 imo. Our kids played with theirs until they were 7 and 5.

Vvvoom · 25/10/2014 07:05

Ask for money and put it in an account for her. Or a day out? Or clothes and useful things. A few toys too, but there's no point in cluttering up your home.

ipswichwitch · 25/10/2014 09:36

For DS2 we have got some things to add on to passed down toys - he plays with DS1's toot toot driver garage so we got the fire station to connect to it. We've also got more happy land stuff to expand on what we already have, as he really likes that too.

bogiesaremyonlyfriend · 25/10/2014 14:57

At 2 she is still young enough not to notice too much!! What about one if those play houses you colour in then she can do that, it's big and has wow factor and disposable. And yes definitely things that are just hers. It's a big thing for my 2 year old dd at the minute.

Gooseysgirl · 25/10/2014 15:01

Definitely a play kitchen if you don't already have one... ours is one of DDs most played with toys.. Family could get her bits to go with it. Ikea do a fab childrens kitchen

jThompson · 25/10/2014 15:41

We did the same as others, bought a couple of new bits for an existing collection ( new train, toy food, bit of duplo etc). Ours are close enough in age that they were still both playing with the same toys so it helped with sharing issues when they both had bits in there.

Dressing up clothes, perhaps with a suitcase or trunk to store them in.
Child sized table and chair.

Is there somewhere you can take her for a trip out while your eldest is at school, something like a toddler gym or swimming session. Then you can wrap something to go along with it.

giantfloorpuzzle · 25/10/2014 19:35

Thanks for the messages!

As unlikely as it seems they both do play together and play the same things alot of the time. Since dd has come along ds and dd both dress up alot together, but apart from old hats and scarfs that they fashion into outfits we don't have anything so I think I'll get dress up stuff for dd but they can still play that together.

Perhaps I will ask family to buy her books. The house is so cluttered already with toys. And there is no such thing as too many books!

Yes, she won't notice much I suppose on xmas day. Santa will get her a nice wooden pram (right now she has a horrible cheap and much loved pushchair).

I will get her craft stuff. She is a bit too young for them yet but she'll grow into them.

Do other people find that second and subsequent dc get less toys than dc1? Like, we already have a doll's house so that box is ticked kind of thing.

I know what you mean. We are just about to have dc#2 & I have wondered the same when we already have so much stuff from ds.

What about a play shop with till & play food? There's some gorgeous wooden play food sets around now. Or maybe a puppet theatre? A pop up tent was a big hit with DS at age 2 - or you could get her a tepee (gltc do lovely ones if you can pick them up on offer). Balance bike or a decent scooter is also a great idea.

starlight1234 · 25/10/2014 22:24

If she is 2 is she into a particular program on TV that wasn't around when DS was growing up or she loves that DS didn't

MATB1 · 25/10/2014 22:43

Puzzles
Scooter
Musical instruments
Marble run

KnittedJimmyBoos · 25/10/2014 22:56

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 26/10/2014 09:54

my dd's are 5 and 2 so have not really put things away. but dd2 loves her Fisher price little people Disney princess castle - currently half price in Argos. was one of the best toys we bought last XMas been played with daily by both dd's.

any films she might like? frozen?

busy books are good for that age - book with figures in around £5 in supermarkets, whsmiths etc

my dd 2 also loves care bears, cats and superheros Grin

Oldraver · 26/10/2014 12:20

Does she have an outside playhouse ? DS had a cheapie one when he was about 2 and played with it until constantly even in winter.
