Stocking must haves for your DC?

I am only just getting the hang of all this with DD who will be 3.9 this Christmas and DS 18 months.
last year I realised it was all about the stocking - and I guess this year is the first time DD will have expectations and remember it all properly next year! so to help me create a winning formula - please tell me what are your annual staples that always go down well - do you have some things you put in every year?
And how do you get the balance between tat and longevity without spending too much?

DD (will be 3.10 at Christmas) is getting:

Decorate your own fairy wand kit
Fairy dust
Bubbles
Gardening gloves
Mini My Little Pony
Bracelet
Harmonica
Xmas stationary set
Cuddly Penguin
Choc coins
Clementine

Quite a lot but we only do 2-3 presents under the tree. I love stockings.

What's a North Pole breakfast stocking? Is it a 1/12 thing?

Mr matey bubble bath
Tons of chocolates and sweets ie choc santa/snowman/coins
Can of coke/lemonade
socks/pants
bed socks
Top trumps
Books
and also individual bits and bob's for each kid
Oh and a selection pack !

we have a rule that everything in the stocking costs under £2.

We don't really stick to it, but it set the scene when they were little, stockings were fun bits, not big presents.
We wouldn't put cds etc in as they are too expensive.

ds will be 12 this year, so the amount of chocolate has increased, as the bits and bobs decrease. But he still gets silly socks etc.
