We all love Qwirkle, 7 yr old, 4 yr old plays with an adult, have also played it adults only with friends. Less keen on Carcasonne and haven't played Ticket to ride.

AMouseLivedinaWindMill · 21/10/2014 22:20

I am not keen on Labyrithn either...

Thanks bakingtins. Maybe will still to qwirkle and get the others other years.
I want to get things we enjoy too as it will be a long time until the next bday when she gets games!

Tri-ominoes is good for all the family too.

Beehatch · 21/10/2014 22:22

My 7 and 5yo love Qwirkle, we have the travel version which fits a table top better, and their little fingers.

Saving Carcassone until they are a bit older. We do have Catan Junior coming for Xmas though.

fuzzpig · 21/10/2014 22:23

Just to confuse things further have you looked at Qwirkle Cubes? It adds the element of probability as you have to roll the pieces like dice before placing them :)

fuzzpig · 21/10/2014 22:25

By the way I'm planning on getting ticket to ride Europe this year, but not entirely sure if the DCs (5/7) will 'get it' so it may just be something that DH and I play. So will be getting other games too. Basically this year it's just lego and board games :o and a monster high doll yuck

AMouseLivedinaWindMill · 21/10/2014 22:37

OK am convinced, qwirkle or qwirkle cubes this year and will look at carsecoone and ticket next year,

ticket looks really lovely though, and does a nordic version too?

We have Qwirkle, all my dcs play it happily, they're 5, 8 & 11. The cube one sounds good too'

CleanHankie · 21/10/2014 23:27

Only had Qwirkle in the household for less than a fortnight but it's been played with every day! (Might have even paid for the app so I can play while the girls are at school...)

northernlurker · 21/10/2014 23:29

we have the USA, Europe and Nordic ticket to ride and love it BUT I think 7 is a bit young for it.

jThompson · 22/10/2014 08:22

We play Carcassonne with the kids, but without scoring the farms at the end to simplify it. My 7 nearly 8 year old still finds the full thing to complicated.

Ticket to ridebis good but again not one we've manages to play with the kids.

Both quirkle and quirkle cubes are good and my 7 year old is hay playing either. I'd go for one of those and let e the others till they are a bit older.

Just to add a perspective on Qwirkle - I have one dc (8) who loves it and who has also loved Labyrinth since he was 6. My other dc (6) dislikes both Labyrinth and Qwirkle. I think it has to do with different capabilities/maturity in strategic/spatial planning, which both those games require some of. Just a thought. But in our family, 3 out of 4 love Qwirkle (travel edition).

As for Ticket to Ride, I have heard that the Europe version is a bit more complicated than the original American version, but have not played either.

Oh, and my dd (6) who prefers tactical to strategic games loves card games such as Sleeping Queens, Rat a Tat Cat etc (all good fun for the whole family). Our newest game addition is For Sale, which is much loved by the whole family:

It is about buying and selling property, great fun with silly pictures (everything from a cardboard box to campervans, castles and skyscrapers), some blind bidding and trying to guess what the others are about to do. Plays in about 15 minutes and perfectly manageable for the 6yo too.

For Christmas, we are adding Incan Gold (simple push your luck game about how far into a cave you dare venture to gather gems) and Sushi Go, also card based. Both are supposed to play quickly, work well for a range of ages and have great reviews on boardgamegeek.com which is a great source of information about board games.
