Best toy cooker and all the bits? (For 2y.o)

I'm sure this will have been asked before, but we're looking to buy a toy kitchen and all the bits to go with it for DS, who will 2 a few days after Christmas. We winked like a wooden kitchen which he will not grow out of too quickly, and hopefully which will last to serve any other child we might have. My mum keeps pointing me towards the ASDA one, but I'm just not sure. We really like the Tidlo country kitchen, but have also looked at more expensive ones, like the little Tykes wooden one.

So, does anyone have any opinions on whether the expensive ones are actually worth it, or, would an ASDA cheapy one do what we want it to?

Also, does anyone have any recommendations of the best play food, pots, plates etc for a two year old? I am quite tempted by starting with the Ikea bits, but we have the Hape toaster, and he loves it. Is it worth splashing out on all the wooden pans and food IYE?

TIA. I'm probably massively overthinking all this, but I'm really scared we'll am e a costly mistake.

Everyone I know has the Ikea kitchen and is very positive about it. I think it's £65 for the unit and the bits and bobs are reasonably priced, but obviously you could get those elsewhere. They seem to sell quite well on ebay too, so you'd eventually potentially get some of your money back. I think we're going to get it for our 18mo dd this year.

Get the IKEA one. Its amazing. I have some accessories from IKEA and some from Sainsbos.

I (and DD) love DDs.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 16/10/2014 18:15

We put little individual push lights under the top part and in the "oven" part too for extra light

Swingball · 16/10/2014 18:17

Was also going to say the Ikea one.

My kids have both enjoyed an ELC kitchen in a self contained box/carry case. Includes food and crocks. Great for trips away and going visiting dull relatives. I dissuaded DM from buying a freestanding play kitchens to save space. The little kitchen set stashes away in an expedit box!

John Lewis do a very cute cream one. May get it for dd for her birthday.

Equimum · 16/10/2014 18:36

Thanks everyone. It's good to hear that the Ikea kitchen is good. We had discounted it on the basis of it not being as pretty as some of the others (we're just going to get the accessories), but I may reconsider now that so many of you have suggested it.

madamcast the John lewis now looks identical to the Tidlo one we have been contemplating, apart from the colour. I'm wondering if Tidlo make it for John Lewis.

thinkivebeen I hadn't thought to look at supermarkets for play food/ accessories etc. Will definitely have a look when I next go to Sainsburys. Thanks

This is ours.

Wilkinsons also do excellent wooden chopping fruit and veg and things like wooden birthday cake and pizzas.

We had the Asda one, the oven door broke off it straight away. We got a replacement one, and the same thing happened whilst we were assembling it!!! If you check the reviews there are many with the same problem. Luckily they have refunded all so I think we will now be trying the Ikea one!

Gunpowder · 16/10/2014 18:53

We've got the pale blue tidlo one, its GORGEOUS!

One of the doors is a bit stuff but that might be due to the substandard kitchen fitters in the Gunpowder house...

Gunpowder · 16/10/2014 18:53

*stiff, not stuff

Gunpowder · 16/10/2014 18:54

If you do get the tidlo one, the Velcro vegetables that you can 'cut' up were a great hit too.

We have the Ikea one n it's fab we have some of the accessories from there other bits have been brought from Amazon on deals they have and some normal kitchen wooden spoons, mini whisks etc.

Sainsbury do some wooden kitchen accessories n food in toy section very pink though n I refused based on the fact they have put with girl toys n aimed at girls!!

Lizardc · 16/10/2014 19:00

My boys love the I kea one too. We have various accessories from Melissa & Doug etc which work well.

Annunziata · 16/10/2014 19:02

I was going to get the Ikea one but the Tidlo ones look so pretty!

WerewolfBarMitzvah · 16/10/2014 19:03

We have the Asda one - no door problems yet. It's actually really quite sturdy and I like it (and I hate tat).
Would recommend.
Also Asda have little wooden pots and pans. Very cute.

Another vote for the ikea one! We bought for DS last xmas and he loves it, and so do all of his friends who come to play. We got some lovely Melissa & Doug wooden foodie bits from amazon to go with it too, great price and very good quality.

5madthings · 16/10/2014 21:30

We have wooden play food with our toy kitchen. Most of it bought when ds1 was little. He is now 15 and it is being used by my youngest who is 3 and I will be able to sell it on once she is done with it. We have added to our collection over the years but most of it was bought for ds1.

We have some Ikea stuff and Melissa and Doug and some from holz/holtz toys? It is lovely and has lasted and is also very tactile. We have some stuff that velcros together like a cake and pizza and milk bottles with lids and eggs where the Velcro is the yellow yolk!

5madthings · 16/10/2014 21:34

Plan toys also do nice play food.

blacktreaclecat · 16/10/2014 21:38

ELC wooden diner kitchen in the half price sale so £75
ELC tea set
Kettle, toaster etc Sainsburys toy sale
Pans, soft food etc from ikea

Vajazzler · 16/10/2014 21:39

Another ikea vote here. Ultra sturdy and comes with a set of feet to raise it a couple of inches when your child has grown bigger. IKEA accessorises are also super cute. Just mini versions of the stainless steel adult ones.

DeathMetalMum · 16/10/2014 21:44

We bought the melisaa and doug cooks corner for dd's last year, dp wasn't keen on the ikea one and this one wasn't too girly which ee both wanted to avoid. We bought accessories from various places. It is still in fantastic condition after almost a years worth of daily use plenty of space for both dd's to play too.

We did also like some from gtlc but went with this one in thw end.

Clairej81 · 16/10/2014 21:45

We bought the IKEA toy kitchen last year for DS for Christmas and he loves it. Strong, easy to build and neutral in colour/ appearance. Would definitely recommend.

We got toy food, pots and pans etc from John Lewis. Toy washing machine (purchased off Amazon) was also a big hit and goes well with kitchen.

herethereandeverywhere · 16/10/2014 21:50

We got the Ikea one 3 years ago and it's still going strong.

Ikea do great fabric fruit/veg/cakes sets which are really cheap and little sets of pots/pans and utensils. We have loads of wooden velcro food too which was all presents but is going strong 3 years later.
