i am struggling this year with what to get my boys.

ds1 is nearly 16, is getting a desktop pc for gaming as his main present (dp is building it) and will be getting a steam voucher for buying whatever game thingies he wants. he is also getting assassins creed rogue for the xbox 360, and 21 and 22 jump street on dvd. this is where i am stuck. no idea what else to get him. he likes gaming, has an xbox360 and a dsi (fairly old now) already has xbox live, isnt into girls much, kind of likes doctor who, minecraft and pokemon. likes computer games and isnt into fashion labels for clothes. having said that he does like funny t-shirts, and likes polo neck tops and hoodies.

ds2 is 13 and has high functioning autism and dyspraxia. is getting a 3ds as his main present. and is getting the amazing spiderman2 dvd, already has the game for his xbox, is mad about football and spiderman, has an xbox360 already and an ipad mini which he has through a scheme at his school. kind of likes pokemon and doctor who, wants minecraft but isnt allowed it (unfortunate ingame purchase incident which led to me banning him from having minecraft on his xbox, however if they do it for the 3ds i may get that). will be buying him a dressing gown as he needs a new one. thinks he is into labels for clothes but has a few (monster, football bits which were handed down from my bestie's son)

i have no idea what else to get them. i m managing to buy for the girls fairly easily, but inspiration for the boys is totally eluding me :(

Do they need more?

That's lots

You could get DS2 some mine craft tat?

Other than that, stocking of pants, socks, lynx chocolate and other necessities. Couple of books

You are already being more than generous

noideawottoget · 15/10/2014 10:12

computer a game and two dvd's is a lot? or a 3ds and a dvd? i dont think thats a lot at all, especially as their sisters will be getting bikes, and other things. also need inspiration for the family too, they are already asking what to buy the kids.

girlywhirly · 15/10/2014 10:14

I think that's a lot of main gifts. I would be only getting small less expensive items now. There are lots of smaller merchandise items around for Dr Who, Spiderman, football lovers etc.

girlywhirly · 15/10/2014 10:19

To be fair, you didn't mention in your OP what you were getting for your girls, and on the basis that some parents have much smaller budgets, it did seem a lot.

TheRealMaryMillington · 15/10/2014 10:22

They are expensive items, though. Couple of hundred quid.

If there is nothing else they want or need, why buy more stuff for the sake of it?

Maybe a few bits of clothes and a couple of books. Nothing else massive.

fieldfare · 15/10/2014 10:33

It does seem like a lot OP yes.
A computer is a high value main gift, as is a 3ds. Why buy more simply for the sake of it?
We tend to get dd a main present she's been hankering for (tablet/laptop type item), some new clothes, a couple of DVD's, a couple of cd's, some books and then bits and bobs for her stocking. Before Xmas we always have a day out in London to go to Winter Wonderland and the theatre etc. oh, and we also tend to buy her tickets for something later in the year that she'll really enjoy, favourite band/ a show etc.

Perhaps there's something going on later in the year that you might all be interested in so could buy tickets for that?

minkymuskyslyoldstoaty · 15/10/2014 10:39

books,
sweets,
t shirt
new cool lamp or pinboard for bedroom,
look on etsy for minecraft bits?
pokemon stuff?
posters.
themed socks/pants?
cool themed pyjama bottoms from primark?
duvet cover?

dollybean · 15/10/2014 10:49

I've just bought ds1 a doctor who jigsaw from the works which was less than a fiver. They do it in a 500 or a 1000 piece which is a couple of £ more.
What about some stationary type stuff? A poster of a favourite film/cartoon or football team to put up in their bedroom? If they play sports you could get they some new equipment or clothing for it. We have got a magnetic dart board which has been played with alot and not just by the kids Grin although I would do some research if considering as some are truly crap.
It's so difficult trying to think of things for boys Confused john lewis have a good selection of thing for teenage boys so might be worth a look- it's all on their website now.

myotherusernameisbetter · 15/10/2014 11:04

for DS1 what about things to go wth his new PC? - e.g. a gaming headset, programmable mouse, gaming mouse surface, gaming keyboard, game capture. Books, Magazine subscription (Stuff magazine maybe?) Viz subscription? T-shirts from Quertee if anything suitable comes up (pokemon/dr who/breaking bad etc all come up very frequently).

For DS2 - A superdry or Hollister/A&F hoody? or a new backpack. Does he like Manga? Maybe Neo magazine? Designer Wallet. Headphones, trainers/Vans/sneakers. Football tickets or merchandise for his favourite team.

noideawottoget · 15/10/2014 11:30

ok. some of the components for the computer will be secondhand so the whole thing will probably cost us about £120 as dp knows what he is doing. my mum and sister are clubbing together to get him a nice monitor. ds2's 3ds will be about £100, he will need at least one game to go with it (no point having a 3ds without at least one 3ds game). they share a small double room so not much space for stuff, an experience would be good although they dont have much in the way of joint interests. i have no idea what Manga is. they had good headphones last year (although i need to buy new ones for dd1 as dd2 sat on them) books are good for ds1 but ds2 cant read very well, he will probably get a new football, cant afford man u tickets, but merchandise is a possibility even if its just a scarf. thanks guys, i knew you lot would have some good ideas :)

Sounds like plenty, dd1 is into gaming and pokemon, she's getting a hudl 2 and one of the new pokemon games for the 3ds ( which come out next month ), she will get a few smaller things such as a pokemon hoodie, a couple geeky shirts, the pokemon annual and some books ( maze runner ).

noideawottoget · 15/10/2014 14:48

a hoodie each would be good, but no idea where to buy. and they will need stocking fillers. just struggling to find inspiration this year.

myotherusernameisbetter · 15/10/2014 14:53

What kind of hoody and budget?

I tend to buy the expensive type 2nd hand where possible as my boys are growing rapidly and I need to keep costs down. I'd rather they reached final adult size and I'd know they would get a proper use from things rather than them having to be replaced each season. Not sure you'd be happy to do that for Christmas though?

noideawottoget · 15/10/2014 15:14

no idea. ds1 is in mens large and has plenty of room. ds2 is in 13-14 years and is slow growing at best.

minkymuskyslyoldstoaty · 15/10/2014 15:17

ah marne2 i remember you i think. vague recollect of pokemon dd? i have name changed tho. my dd also liked and likes Pokemn.

Ragwort · 15/10/2014 15:25

Sounds like very generous gifts but yes, add a hoody if you want.

Stocking fillers for my teenage DS are things like - Lynx, socks, Lynx, underwear, school pens & stuff, torch, more Lynx, chocolates, foodie treats, even more Lynx, Grin - Just checked my stash and I have more than 6 Lynx shower gels already !

RabidFairy · 15/10/2014 15:36

Would your DS2 like some spiderman graphic novels? You can get as huge selection in waterstones or on amazon.

crazykat · 15/10/2014 15:43

It's the cost of the gifts that makes it seem plenty. Many parents myself included wouldn't be able to spend that much on one present plus Xbox games and more besides.

It also depends how you work out gifts in your family. Some parents but the same number of gifts for each child while others spend the same amount. At 16 your ds1 is old enough to understand that a computer, stream voucher and an Xbox game costs significantly more than a bike unless its a top of the line bmx or islabike.

If you want to get them more then I'd suggest a couple of new hoodies and polo shirts for your eldest ds.

If your ds2 likes labels then a jack wills hoodie, his teams football shirt with his name on. Games and accessories for the 3ds, iTunes voucher.

noideawottoget · 15/10/2014 17:56

thanks guys :)

For stockings, you can't go wrong with boxers, socks, chocolate, tube of pringles, a comic/magazine, dvd, a book. And lots of lynx!

IsItMeOr · 15/10/2014 23:05

Redbubble has some unusual designs for hoodies or t-shirts.

You need to allow time for shipping, as I think lots of it comes from the US.
