It has probably been done before but what to get 4/5 yr old girl?

Dd (nearly 5 at Christmas) is proving difficult to buy a main present for. She watches Nick Jr so is watching too many adverts and wants all manner of crap but I'm not sure what she would really want!
She already has frozen stuff galore (well toddler Elsa, Barbie Elsa, magi clip everyone, Anna and Elsa fancy dress) and is getting Barbie Anna from her Aunt.
She is getting a Ken doll and a Barbie car from her grandparents.
I wanted to get her the Lego Cinderella castle but my dh is worried that she isn't ready for Lego yet and will just get frustrated and cross.
Last year she got a lot of sylvanian family stuff but has only played with it intermittently. She also has a fair bit of Playmobil which comes out occasionally (and is all jumbled up, grrr!).
She is into watching you tube videos (involving Barbie/magiclip dolls/shopkins and playdoh) and would like to make her own so don't know whether a video camera would work but we couldn't afford a good one so don't know if it is worth it.
Any genius suggestions as to what to get her?

Dd is 3, 4 this week! And seems to have similar tastes... We're getting the elsa and Ana magicclips, Sofia the first tea party game and shopping galore for her birthday.

Fovr xmas shes having things to add to 'collections' eg barbie outfits, a couple of new mlp 's, tinkerbell and the pirate fairy dvd, one or two new duplo for her set (lego is too intricate and small with a 6mo around) Sofia and minimus for her castle, and a couple of busy books and stuck on stories.

She has the Julia Donaldson books coming from a relative, and an olaf tea set, also we have got her the snow glow elsa and toddler Ana, some colouring books and crayons and a bit of playdough.

Clothes wise she is getting some from relatives and then new pj's pants socks and a couple of outfits from us

Crafty stuff? My dd is the same age and loves sets from yellow moon or galt
Loom bands and case
Aqua beads
Doctors set
Games eg orchard toys
Playmobil big hit here
A bike?

RunawayReindeer · 14/10/2014 09:46

Should've said loads of shopkins- not shopping... We have three 20 packs, the small mart, fruit and veg stand and bakery.. I am already dreading keeping them.away from.the smallest

DD is four two weeks before Xmas. She is getting;

The Swimmimg Dora doll
Baby Born bath and doll
Playdoh
Playmobile princess castle and bits (not the huuuuuge castle)
Jessie the Cowgirl and Bullseye (she loves Toy Story)
Snow White dress up
Cash register
Post office.

I think I'm stopping at that Grin

SouthernComforts · 14/10/2014 11:08

I'm in the same boat. Bike as main present. Accessories for baby Annabel. Frozen Barbie. Frozen dress. jigsaws?

Then I'm at a loss. She's a Christmas birthday too and we have a huge family who buy for her so its hard.

TrisisFour · 14/10/2014 11:28

DD is 5. She is getting:

Playmobil Swimming Pool (from my Mum)
Playmobil Caravan and SUV (from FIL)

From us:

Playmobil Veterinary Centre
Playmobil Veterinary Operating Room
Playmobil Children's Pony Farm
Elsa, Anna, Olaf Plush Dolls
Baby Annabell (version 8 doll)
Orchard Games
Elsa Dress
Anna Coronation Dress

She's got loads of other stuff, books, hair stuff, plush MLPs, chocolates etc. Way too much to be honest.

She loves Playmobil though, she got the huge Princess Castle with all the furniture for her birthday (I bought the castle on Xmas Eve last year online with Boots for £50!! - normally £150). I will be having a look on Xmas Eve again this year to see what else we can get - although I already have the large school and the children's nursery school that I bought all less than half price, for her birthday next June!

Littlemousewithcloggson · 14/10/2014 12:06

My dd is 5 and she is getting:
Playmobil holiday home
Ana dress
Lego friends sets - these are a good start to see how much your child likes Lego!
Frozen board game, stamper set and activity book
Design a friend doll and outfit
Monsters university stuffed toys, stationary and back pack
Remote controlled racing car set
Hudl tablet
Ds games - Disney and barbie ones.
Barbie gymnastics set

These gifts include ones that our (large) family are giving her so aren't
just from us!
Last year for her 4th birthday/Christmas she got a dsi xl and a handed down iPhone with games/camera/video facilities. I thought she was a bit young for both but has loved them and they haven't taken up too much space!!

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 15/10/2014 11:26

lego also do a juniors range which is the normal bricks but simpler age is 4plus they do a few good ones :)

my 5 year old and 2 year old enjoy lego - I build the more complicated bits and they play with it :) I find the city stuff quite robust im not overly impressed by the friends range personally! or look up belville on ebay its basically an older version of friends but more simple ive got the dolls house and hans Christian Anderson sets for my youngest :) looks great!

also second the busy books my 2 love them - tesco had a palace pets one £5 and whsmiths had a frozen one and lots more in 2 for £10

Felyne · 15/10/2014 12:55

Dress-up stuff is a good idea. The Melissa and Doug pirate set has been popular with my DD and is still going strong despite the hat being squashed and sat on several times!
Sylvanian Families, but this stuff is like crack - only get some if the kid already has a bit. Otherwise the parents will NOT thank you for starting this addiction.
Orchard Toys do some really good educational games.
Stickers, anything with stickers. TK Maxx is good for sticker books.
A 'handbag' or similar for carrying vitally important bits and pieces of crap around

vikjul · 15/10/2014 13:24

Huge Playmobil fans here too (my dd is 6 now)! I wouldn't mind the jumbling up but encourage it if that is what gets her playing with it :-). My dd tends to enjoy Playmobil in quite random combinations, whereas sets set out as they were intended don't seem to grab her imagination in the same way.

Anyway, my suggestions for a 5yo would be:

Magnatiles. They are expensive but great fun and have been our best toy investment ever, we first got them when DD was 3 and her older brother was 6 and they have been played with if not daily then at least several times a week. We started off with 100 as a joint gift to both kids and have since added to the collection every year. They are mainly used with the Playmobil or other figures to build castles, zoos, prisons, mazes etc. When other children visit they always gravitate towards them, whether they are 2yo or 10yo.

Play silks - despite access to other dress-up stuff, play silks in various colours are what my dd and her friends use the most for dressing up, but they are also used with the Playmobil as grass, sea or sand, as bedding for dolls, as fishing ropes, horse reins etc etc. Also quite expensive but used for years and very imaginatively.

Board games - we love the Gamewright card games! Sleeping Queens has been a hit with any 5yo we have introduced it to (the box says from 8yo but perfectly fine for a 5yo). Otherwise Rat a Tat Cat is great fun too, not to mention Duck Duck Bruce (if you can find it).

Oh, and for Lego, I would probably start with a small set that is easy to build, to see if she enjoys following instructions, along with a box of mixed bricks without instructions, to see whether she prefers to build her own creations.

Donthackmenow · 15/10/2014 14:38

The magnatiles look interesting but a bit more than I wanted to spend. I wanted to spend approx £50 on the toy (she is also getting a party dress, gloves hat and scarf and a book from us plus 10 small presents from Father Christmas). Would a small set of magnatiles be enough for her to get enjoyment from them?
She has got a lot of the Playmobil already mentioned, although I am considering the unicorn/princess castle as an option. She has a fair amount of dress up already but saw a 'wedding dress' that she liked the other day.
I am wondering about getting her a couple of board games - she commented that she would like operation when she saw an advert the other day.

Don't know what we're getting dd2 yet, she's just turned 5. Best presents to date have been her scooter, a furby and a leap pad ultra

vikjul · 15/10/2014 20:16

I think that the smaller set of magnatiles might risk not being quite as fun for castle building etc and so not offer the same versatility/play value. Not sure though, as we started with a set of 100.

LucilleBluth · 16/10/2014 13:39

The playmobile castle is currently £39.99 down from £49.99 on Amazon.

Donthackmenow · 16/10/2014 17:38

Thank you Lucille, I am now the proud owner of the unicorn jewel castle!
