Just to give a slightly different perspective valiant I am in a similar situation to your dsd In that my partners parents have vairy good jobs and a vairy nice house and like to give vairy nice presents to their only ds and only granddaughter. They bought an entire wardrobe for dd1 when she was born, and humongous amounts of xmas presents etc. My parents bought an outfit and felt like crap as that was all they could afford.

Dmil bought dp and I around £600 of gifts. This was nice of her. My parents gave a lovely, well thought out hamper of our favourite foods (including Aldi and lidl) which was also a really nice gift.

Dmil then assumed we would spend the next two weeks solely with her as 'we bought you all these things and now because of this yes, we do own shares in your life' (exact words said in an argument)

I prefer the company of my parents. So does dd, as does dp... It really isn't all about the gift...

What about some nice tea-towels? You can never have too many.

Microwaves can be anywhere from 30 quid upwards.

Hampers always seem like a good idea, but in my experience it's very difficult to flesh out a hamper sufficiently with 'treats' and luxury items without spending a small fortune. then there's the basket, the tissue paper, the cellophane…. it's not a cheap or easy thing to do unless you are planning on filling a cardboard box with baked beans from Aldi.
