Gluten-free Christmas

Is there any appetite (sorry terrible pun) for a gf christmas thread? I find it the hardest time of year, and usually feel a bit deprived. Blush

I thought we could swap some recipes and tips.

I am going to try to make the Nigella chocolate Christmas cake, but sub out the wheat flour for Dove's farm gf flour. I will probably add a lot little extra booze so it isn't dry.

I have also ordered some things from Baked to Taste to try them out before Christmas. They do lovely looking things like mince pies, sausage rolls, pies and pasties. I will report back when I've had a chance to try things.

My mum managed a pretty good bread sauce last year with Genius bread, so I'll have to ask her how she did it.

Anyone have any other tips for a lovely gf Christmas?

BedPig - I saw these frozen roasties on Ocado the other day - they are gluten free. I haven't tried them though, so I can't vouch for their quality! Smile

bedpig - previous years, M&S have done a garnish pack with bacon wrapped chipolatas, stuffing balls and so on. The chestnut stuffing is really nice too

Yey! I'm in :) last Christmas I found a brilliant magazine called gluten free Christmas and we did quite a few of the recipes from that. The stollen cake went down a storm and the gingerbread was great too.

I had a gluten free mince pie in sainsbury cafe today and twas most pleasing :) def m and s for sausages (though their bread is shite) and our able and Cole Christmas catalogue had quite a few gluten free options in it too. We're trying a Xmas pudding from tesco.

Thank for that Wishes and CMOT, some good ideas although I'm wondering whether I should just do the roasties myself? I've never done them before but I saw a straight forward method in the asda Christmas magazine that was gf. I obviously need to practice making and eating lots of roast dinners before Christmas Grin

I've already got my roasties in the freezer ready to shove in the oven on Christmas day. I just threw the potatoes into a pan off boiling water, brought back to boil then cooked for 7 mins, drained, returned to pan still on heat for 30 seconds to dry off then sprinkled with rice flour and shook to roughen them up a bit. Then I laid them out, not touching, on trays lined with greaseproof paper and once cool put them in the freezer. When they are totally frozen solid you can shove them in a freezer bag then just cook in hot oil/fat for 30 mins on the day.

I can confirm that ive taste tested the m&s Xmas pud and it's yummy!

CMOTDibbler · 27/11/2014 20:29

The small Tescos pud was lovely. I ate it purely in the interests of public information of course

WishesAndStars · 28/11/2014 13:52

Testing of products pre-Christmas is very important and a public service of course. Wink

Marking for later.

My DD is wheat and egg free (among many others) so I'll be baking a variety of bits and pieces in the run up. As she's now 3.10, I feel bad if we indulge without a suitable alternative for her.

Thanks for the gluten and egg free mince pies recipe!

Ive been gluten free for a couple of years and Christmas is quite easy.

Were getting turkey from m and s this year gf stuffing and wrapped in bacon not bad. ..but we usually get tesco butter basted turkey crown which is good to.

Roast potatoes are easy I boil them for about 10 mins first while heating a deep oven tray with oil in and once oil is nice and hot transfer potatos over (without the water obviously) and cook until golden brown I keep flipping them until whole potato is golden.

For pudding ive perfected a fridge cheesecake which my dp says is the best cheesecake ever. I use gluten free digestives for the base.

Ive also recently perfected gf yorkshires.

Apart from that nibbles are a little harder 99p shop had gf pringle style crisps and roses/quality streets are fine.
