What is your 1yo getting for Xmas?

I keep getting asked by friends and family what they should get DS (13m) for Xmas. He has only just had a birthday and has loads of toys and books, some aren't even out of the packaging yet as im doing it in phases because he got so much.

MIL in particular wants to buy him a big ticket item, but he doesn't need any big ticket items! Yesterday she commented on how the baby towels we use to dry him were getting a bit small, so I suggested that she buy him some towels for xmas and she was most horrified at the thought of buying him something practical.

When I get asked what people should buy DS and I reply 'I don't know', ive been getting some comments about how I should have a list that people can pick from, and that all other children have lists (even the ones that are too young to actively pick what they want as presents). Am I odd by not having given lots of thought to what DSD 'needs' or 'wants' in the form of gifts?

Ive no idea, although if asked id rather give some direction as I want to avoid as much plastic tat as possible as like I said, he already has so much.

Repost here please!

Dd is getting a scuttlebug, a buggy version of her favourite book and some clothes. That's it, though we may raid the loft and see what else we can wrap up, in case elder dcs notice she doesn't have muchSmile.

Her birthday and last Christmas were the same, we just don't need anything toy and book wise as she has two siblings so we already have too much STUFF.

BauerTime · 30/09/2014 10:25

ive reported to get it moved. cheers.

Ds will be 1 10 days before christmas., he is getting a rocking giraffe for his bday, a little people wheelies playset and a singing olaf from frozen for Christmas. We have told the older dcs that father Christmas doesn't give babies many presents as they are too little to go on the naughty/nice list.

BauerTime · 30/09/2014 10:32

I don't have any older DCs so don't have to worry about not letting the cat out of the bag with lack of presents. DH and I probably wont get him anything much TBH and will just put some money aside to buy him something when he needs it rather than spend money just because its xmas.

But its others that want to buy him stuff that's the problem. I hate the thought of people wasting their money on things that wont get used and would much prefer they bought him nothing or put a fiver in his bank account but I know if I suggested this they would think I was being a bit bah humbug and go and buy him a lovely singing toy instead.

DD will be 11 months at Christmas. I'm getting her one of those back packs with baby reigns on. I'm going to do a little stocking, mostly with nicer versions of things she needs, like a pink sparkly tooth brush.

If anyone asks what she wants I think I'll suggest clothes, she's got plenty of toys and grows so fast! For her birthday I'm buying her a 3in1 trike :)

Artandco · 30/09/2014 10:36

What about duplo Lego? Says 18months-5years approx on the box but no harm getting few months before and keeping, and can always just give the biggest bricks first few months. Something that's not too babyish and will last well

BauerTime · 30/09/2014 10:38

artandco sounds good but he already got 3 lots of megablocks for his birthday (one I re-gifted and put the money in his bank) and doesn't understand them really yet.

When dd was one she had a Wheelybug, a Le Toy Van Honeybake kitchen (smaller than other toy kitchens so she could reach it), and a tonne of Happyland. She was enjoying the kitchen by about 18m or so and we got her a normal sized one when she was two. I had an amazon wish list for her for anyone who asked what they could get but it was mostly books (always good presents) and stuff to grow into, jigsaws, latches board etc. A Smart Trike would be a good MIL idea if he hasn't got one already, by spring/summer he will love it.

TeWiSavesTheDay · 30/09/2014 11:37

Mine is getting bath toys, a train with stacking blocks on the carriages, musical instruments, flutterballs, bunting to decorate her room.

I would ask for things they'll grow into using, Toot toot garage is bigger and popular with 1/2yos lots of different bits you can get to extend it now.

SmileAndNod · 30/09/2014 11:51

Second a toy kitchen, dd (15mo) loves ours. She also likes the dolls house and plays with it more than dd did. Brio and duplo are also popular (and still played with by the other two so have longevity) and she LOVES Lego though I do realise she's too small

IssyStark · 30/09/2014 11:59

Suggest money for their child ISA to anyone who asks. If they want something more exciting, then 'premium bonds' instead!

And ask for the towels (toddler rather than baby sized), what about suggesting to your mum that she get them personalised? My almost 3yo is sad that his largest hodded towel is beginning to get too small fro him, so your DS may well bcome attached to his towels as well Wink

That said, we do have Amazon lists for both our DS (we ahve th widget so we can add stuff from anywhere to the list), mainly to reduce duplication and point relatives in the right direction. They are particularly useful if DS gets into a particular character/book series. But at one, you could easily add things like clothes, towels, socks (great for little ones to open as they care about the paper not the contents).

But honestly, if you can, get people into the money habit asap rather than the tat.

Good luck!

BauerTime · 30/09/2014 13:12

Thanks all, some great ideas coming out here! Puzzles are a good shout.

He already has a smart trike, she got him that for his birthday. The thing is, he just doesn't need any expensive things but I think that some people just cannot compute that small/inexpensive/practical things are just as valid a gift.

Amazon wishlist sounds like a good idea although MIL wont have a clue how to use it

Ds will be 10 months at Christmas. However a lot of what I have bought is for him to grow into, so could still apply to your ds.

Wooden Bricks
Shape Sorter
Pull Along Toy
Plastic Animals
Toy Picnic Set
Rucksack
Skittles
Set of Nursery Rhyme Books
Set of Christmas Themed Books
Wow Toy Set (Alfie's Adventure Set)
Cloth Doll Family
Fisher Price Play Buckets
Max Mouse with Scooter (ELC)
Simple Puzzle
Giggle Ball
Stacking Cups
Leapfrog Counting Train
Tiger Torch that roars (Lidl)

Keepsake stuff - Cutlery, Money Box, Bookends, First Tooth and First Curl Boxes, Guinness Book of Records from the year he was born.

Dressing Gown
Blanket

Not quite sure whether I will split what he has between Christmas and Birthday, or not.

ipswichwitch · 01/10/2014 19:57

DS2 will be 1 just before Christmas and will be getting Happyland stuff - his big brother has some so the idea is to put it all put so they can play together fight over the same toy.
We also got the vtech toot toot airport and some cars so we can connect it to big brothers garage, as he loves playing with that (well, bashing it with a wooden spoon at the minute!)
Other than that, it'll be some really nice clothes as he mostly wears DS1's hand me downs, so I thought I'd spend a bit more on a few lovely bits for him

Imperial · 01/10/2014 21:55

What about something for the garden? Slide? Sand pit? Or Wooden train set, toy garage, tea set, mega sketcher, rocking horse, little table and chairs set, proper wooden bricks, nice bookcase, pop up tent/tunnel, doll's buggy, ball pool, toy keyboard, happy land - maybe the bus, set of classic books, play food, season ticket to local farm park?

millymae · 01/10/2014 22:22

If you've got somewhere to put it a play tent for inside the house - my mum bought dd1 one shaped like a house for her 1st birthday and she (and her sister and brother) have had so much use out it.

Sorry to be annoying. I want to save this under "watch this thread", but for some reason I can't.

I am sorry to bump a zombie thread.
