Toys that will never go out of fashion

This year I did a big clear-out of all the toys the DC didn't use. I was left with what I reckon are classics that will never go out of fashion. This is the kind of thing I have on my 'classic' list for present ideas for my nieces and nephews:

  • wooden blocks
  • Duplo/Lego
  • Playmobil
  • ball
  • road map mat
  • toy garage
  • matchbox cars
  • basic musical instruments
  • Schleich-type animal figurines
  • wooden farm
  • jigsaw puzzles
  • sandpit, bucket, spade
  • slide
  • easel, paint, drawing & craft materials
  • books
  • dolls
  • play kitchen with pans, utensils and play food
  • balance bike
  • scooter
  • trampoline

The DC are nearly 5 and nearly 2. What toys do your DC always play with and how old are they?

Great list. Can I add:

Pretend iron, ironing board, mop and bucket, dustpan and brush, washing up bowl and brush and tea set

Tap Tap Art (cork board, wooden pieces and brass tacks)

Some kind of barn, tractor and fencing for the Schleich animals

Plasticine/play doh and cutters

Peg board

Puppets

Till, shopping basket

Torch

Tap Tap Art! Thanks :) There are some really good ideas here. It's disheartening when I buy a present that a DN 'really wants' and it's forgotten 5 minutes after unwrapping it.

In addition to some of the toys mentioned above, my dd (2.6) also loves:
Dominoes
Simple jigsaw puzzles
Her wooden Noah's Ark
Shopping trolley
Her little electric keyboard

loubielou I love that kaleidocope projector that you linked too. So would DS1, its a shame that its only available in pink as he is now conditioned to turning his nose up at pink toys. He would love mking the patterns.

AndHarry · 01/10/2014 11:54

Same here WellTidy.

Its a shame isn't it AndHarry. Before he started school, DS would have positively embraced the pink! Now, despite this type of toy being right up his allley, he will say that its a girl toy and stop himself wanting to play with it, even though I know that he would actually love it. I've googled for a version in more boyish or gender neutral colours, but no luck.

ELC Tap a Shape

We have just been given a 2nd hand cheapo dolly pushchair. DD2 is acting like Christmas has come early. She has lined up both pushchairs and keeps grinning at them!!

AndHarry · 01/10/2014 21:41

Thanks for the ELC link. I'll definitely get one of those for me.

DS has brought home 'Chloe the Topaz Fairy' as his reading book today so a pink kaleidoscope torch might not be completely out of the question after all. 47 books about fairies in crop tops needs to go Hmm

It's rubbish that the Kaleidescope thing is only pink. My DDs would have liked it just as much if it had been red. And it's not as if it's a girly toy, a torch and a kaleidescope... you couldn't get more gender neutral!

My kids are 4 and 7.

Any kind of action figures for Ds so Star Wars, soldiers, action men.

Football cards.

Lego

Football.

For dd it's all about dolls and outdoor toys like swing, wheelbarrow, trampoline.

She does have a dolls house which I'd say is a classic but she doesn't play with it much. Also loves peppa stuff but not a classic.

Stickers

Torch

Chalk for outside

Fancy dress

I know it's not the same but this kaleidoscope looks cool

Amazon

AndHarry · 02/10/2014 14:17

This space one looks quite good. DS and DD would like this dinosaur one too.

Think they're missing a trick by not selling that torch in more neutral colours.

For older kids I would add: -

Meccano (sp?)
K'nex
Circus type toys (spinning plate, juggling balls and diabolo)
Marble Run

Traditional board games - Draughts, Ludo, Snakes and Ladders etc.

Also, I can't remember if anyone has said Fuzzy Felt or beads

ScrabbledLeggsAndToes · 30/10/2014 11:18

Oh, and Saxoflute! Does anybody else remember that?

I got some for my niece a couple of years ago (my brother loved me for that!!!) I got it from elc, but they sell it on Amazon too.

I thought it was worth bumping this thread, as it gives lots of inspiration for prezzies Smile

Spydra · 06/08/2015 22:37

Spirograph
Etch a sketch
Wooden zoo/farm etc

SideOrderofChips · 06/08/2015 23:28

My little fucking pony

Both my DD's have played with the ones that were mine as a kid!
