Does everyone handover stockings?

I never had stocking as a child and nor did DH so we have never done them for our children.

Every post I read on here mentions stocking presents, which I understand to be things like hair boobles ( ;) ) sweets and little bits and pieces which I would just wrap and stick on the pile.

Anyone else not have stockings?

Yes when I was little I would open my stocking on my own much like everything else but that's a whole other thread but now there is no way I want to miss a moment of them opening their stockings! We all pile onto our bed and dig in (unlike the main presents when it is strictly one at a time etc) and it's brilliant. Although the presents in the stocking are small and usually cheap, they often include something really special (in the sense that I went to great lengths to find it and it is really, IMO, well chosen) so I love seeing their faces :)

combust do you have a pic of the pretty stockings? If love to do that but lack imagination!!!

combust22 · 30/09/2014 19:48

Sorry I dont'. I use bits and bobs that I find in the poundshop or some evergreen from the garden, a little spray of fake snow to make them look authentic and just handled by santa!!

I love doing the stockings. All the DC will be teenagers this Christmas but if I were to suggest an end to stockings there would be a mutiny. Our house creaks in a very child-waking way so the stockings are left in the living room.

They don't need to be full of tat - as PPs have suggested, stationery, socks, toiletries and books all go down well. They always get socks. The older ones get 'leaving home' presents too - wooden spoons, egg cups, that sort of thing.

I used to have a pillowcase as a child, and DH used to get an actual sock, so I suppose the 'proper stockings' the DC have are a compromise.

I love stockings, they are the best bit for me too, I love choosing the stuff to go in them, finding secret Father Christmas wrapping paper, remembering the feeling of waking up when it's still dark with a heavy, rustling stocking on your feet.
I made the dc's stockings out of an old Christmas tablecloth that my grandmother used to put on the table she had her tree on. I love seeing the fabric still being used. I made sure to make them wide enough to fit a picture book or annual.

FC is a bit of a traditionalist in our house - he doesn't like faddy toys or electronics. He'll usually bring nice colouring books and pens, an audio book, and a book as well, chocolate coins and traditional old-fashioned sweets or candy canes, something "cosy" like mittens or socks or hand warmers, and things like card games, craft kits, cuddly toys, animal models, bouncy balls. He also always gets one penguin-themed thing for Dd 1 and one reindeer themed thing for dd 2.

We always had pillow cases instead of stockings and everyone got one ( dc and adults) ours only have 5 things in one of which has to be selection box. Only dilemma I have this year is now dc know about Father Christmas and it will also be first christmas as separated family, so do i still do myself one or just dc?? i always used to buy myself the presents and wrap them but this time dc will know its me so seems pointless but still want to do it for them. Trying really hard to keep our traditions the same even though christmas will be split between the 2 of us.

Keep doing it! Of course you should have a stocking too Smile

Knowing about it doesn't diminish the magic of the season, it just means everyone gets to partake in playing along with it. Which is the important bit, after all Smile

fuzzpig · 01/10/2014 07:34

I'd still keep doing it - they will most likely (subconsciously perhaps) appreciate the consistency :)

Stupidhead · 01/10/2014 08:09

We didn't have them when younger, it started when I was 14 and my brother brought his (posh) girlfriend to stay and DM was desperate to impress her, insisting 'we do this every year...'.

My DCs love their stockings more than the main presents, DS1 lost 3 days one Xmas just by playing with a yoyo - he's 16 now and I still put a yoyo in his every year!

HampshireBoy · 01/10/2014 08:32

As a child we always had "stockings", normally an annual, some sweets and small toys.

Our DSs will be 20 and 23 this xmas and will still get a small stocking, with jokey presents and sweets in as well as things like socks, boxers and Lynx (the oldest will probably get the latest Beano annual as well). My exW and I also make sure each other gets something as a stocking Blush yes, I know some might view it as sad but to us it is a bit of fun.

The main presents will be under the tree to be opened later, though there are less now they are older and they mainly want money.

Haha this reminds me of my all-time favourite stocking filler - a black mamba x-brain yoyo.

My poor parents, the thoughtful, large presents under the tree (include a new bike) were pretty much ignored, and they were most bemused when I declared the £5.99 last minute stocking filler the best present of all time and played with it constantly over the christmas break Blush

GirlAnachronism · 02/10/2014 10:20

I love stockings, I don't do one for adults anymore :( but love making ones up for my dc. Always have a soft cuddly toy in them, new toothbrush, a small book, sugar mouse and chocolate coins, plus something random from hawkins etc. We hang them in the living room, and the DC open them before a quick breakfast and then big presents.

Stockings and 1 present from Santa.

JerseySpud · 02/10/2014 10:55

We do stockings. We use them as a breather from waking up to going downstairs.

Ours are just traditional sized stockings, not sacks. They have

DD1: hair bobbles, hair clips, nail polish, lip balm, soaps, bouncy ball, orange, chocolate coins

DD2: Crayon roll (with crayons, rolled up lol) hair slides, hair bobbles, bouncy ball, lip balm, orange, chocolate coins

And any other little bits like the lego figures that come in the surprise bags.

We use the kids stockings to keep them sodding quiet for 5 minutes whilst we manage to wake up
