I'm hosting my first christmas this year. This is our fourth christmas as a family and the first time we will be staying at home to eat.

Probably a bit early to be thinking about this yet, but I don't know what time to serve the main christmas meal (Turkey ect)

What time do you have yours?

Breakfast around 8, lunch for 1 and nibbles around 6/7.

Boxing Day is fab because we will get up and have breakfast around 8 then drive to my aunts where my extended family would have spent Christmas Day. The day involves picking at leftoversf or breakfast, lunch and dinner...yum!

WalkingWolf · 19/09/2014 14:10

I love the idea of having dinner with candles when it's dark outside. How Christmassy! Grin

Normal time about 1.30ish as don't really have breakfast before that and then in evening all the yummy buffet stuff which then eat for rest of week whenever we feel like it.

PesoPenguin · 19/09/2014 16:28

Last year we had our Christmas dinner at tea time (6ish) and much prefer erred it as you don't get that, ' so that's it then' feeling mid afternoon. We'll definitely be sticking to eating later now and I love the candles idea ??

RoganJosh · 19/09/2014 16:33

We aim for about 2.30 to 3. We do have young children but largely ignore them when thinking about time as they don't eat much anyway.
I don't want to eat too early or there's no time for playing with presents.

ilovepowerhoop · 19/09/2014 16:37

we have it around 5/6pm

vestandknickers · 19/09/2014 16:40

We have ours at 12.30 because the children would be too hungry if we waited any longer.

We then have a nibbly, snacky tea later whenever anyone is hungry again.

Our little tradition is that the children get some fun bath bits in their stockings and have a lovely bath late morning with all their new toys, bubbles etc then get dressed into posher clothes for lunch. Gives me a child free time to concentrate on the lunch prep and they really love it.

ilovepowerhoop · 19/09/2014 16:43

we have breakfast and a snacky lunch selection boxes before having the main dinner at 5/6pm

marne2 · 19/09/2014 16:45

Usually around 1ish depending on what plans we have for later in the day ( visiting relatives ).

Shockers · 19/09/2014 16:48

3-4 here too. Heartyish breakfast, then long walk with friends which includes coffee and Christmas cake at the top of a hill. Back to finish making of dinner.
The children have some gifts in the morning and some after dinner.

wfrances · 19/09/2014 17:52

3-4 ish
no rush
we dont have tea just snack for rest of of evening and drinks

SuchSweetSorrow · 19/09/2014 17:58

About 12.30/1ish. We like a buffet early evening so works best for us

TurnOverTheTv · 19/09/2014 18:14

Kids get up early, so

9am Buck's Fizz and bacon and eggs

12.30 champagne cocktails and canapés

1.30 starter
2.00 main course

Pudding is a self serve affair. In laws like it straight after lunch, we have it about 4pm.

6pm fuck off cheese board and red wine, fancy chocolates for afters

10pm. Turkey sandwich to soak up the booze.

CiderwithBuda · 19/09/2014 18:15

Four-ish. We have a nice breakfast and then some nice canapés etc with champagne and play some games etc while dinner is cooking. Then dinner at around 4 and then ultra competitive Trivial Pursuit. Try and avoid TV.

TheWoollybacksWife · 19/09/2014 18:16

Same as 70

We eat when it is dark and have candles and fairy lights to light the room and have to be finished in time for Dr Who Grin It just looks magical with everything sparkling on the table. Older DCs sort the washing up while I relax with a glass of wine and my box of Thornton's chocolate mints.

Youngest DC is 7 so not really constrained by naps (apart from DH) and early bedtimes.

We have pastries etc at breakfast and there is usually something like pate and cheese and crackers for anyone who isn't having a selection box for lunch.

eastmidswarwicknightnanny · 19/09/2014 18:27

About 4 we have breakfast as normal, brunch at 11.30 as this fitted in with little one lunchtime and then 4 fitted in with his dinner although he is 4 now and eats as n when meals are served.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 19/09/2014 18:37

3ish. Breakfast about 9 (usually croissants etc)
Canapes in lieu of a starter about 12.30 on
Dinner 3-4 followed by games, telly, whatever.
Pudding if anyone wants it about 7

It means no one has to get up at the crack of dawn to put the turkey in (the DCs aren't early risers so we aren't either) and we can have a lovely relaxed morning with presents etc and cooking starting about 1 (everything prepped before the big day). DH might take the DCs out to play footy while I cook, otherwise we don't leave the house. DH and DF do all the clearing up.

Notso · 19/09/2014 18:42

Ours depends on whether in-laws are involved or not. If they are we have to have it at one at the latest as they gave to have Christmas tea with his Nana, which nobody ever wants to eat.

I hate doing it that early as I seem to miss out on more. If it's just us or my family and us we have starters at 4 ish then dinner at 5/6ish.

123Jump my DC range in age from 2-14 and we do all the playing with toys, going for a walk etc while dinner is cooking.
DH and my Dad if he's here, do the washing up but I wash as I go so there's very little anyway.
Turkey sandwiches are reserved for Boxing Day and beyond Grin

Pollywallywinkles · 19/09/2014 19:28

Normally when it's dark outside so we can have candles.

Have a breakfast at about 11ish.

Have done this for the last 30 years, so no Dc, DC and now adult DC.

RockySpeed · 19/09/2014 19:39

But we eat dinner in the middle of the day and tea in the evening Wink

IShallCallYouSquishy · 19/09/2014 19:46

Past couple years about 5pm to tie in with DD dinner time. DS this year too.
DH and I will then munch cheese and biscuits when they're in bed.

Pre DC was late lunch time. About 2ish maybe. Depended when we were out of bed and dressed, done pressies etc. aaah the carefree days!

MamaPain · 19/09/2014 19:49

123Jump, we've had the same routine since the children were small and it's always worked for us.

We eat around 2:30, I always aim for 2pm but because there are usually so many of us and I am not the best at cooking it runs late.

We have a decent sized breakfast and then when people arrive around 12ish I serve drinks and canapés (sounds far posher than it is). Kids always eat their dinner so I think it works ok.

Giraffeski · 19/09/2014 19:50

Invariably, two hours after I have planned to. EVERY YEAR.

financialwizard · 19/09/2014 19:52

Cheese board.....might get a large one this year.

jamtoast12 · 19/09/2014 20:54

Bout 3 even when kids were toddlers. I'd give them breakfast then bacon butty bout 11.30am. I'd hate to eat before 1pm....its too rushed and biggest part of the day is over then.
