My Little Pony or similar?

Daughter is nearly 4 and I am looking for something to replace Thomas the Tank Engine in her affections. Was thinking about my little pony and wanted to ask those with any experience, 1. Are they any good (know they have been redone and now more "skinny and bony " than before, and 2. what should I start with please?

Has she gone off Thomas? If not, I'd just stick to what she loves.

My DS3 likes Carebears. He's 3. We watch the origional films, there's one on Netflix and one on YouTube. He's not keen on the modern updated ones though.

my 4yo DS left Thomas for the Octonoughts and an all-consuming obsession with dinosaurs Wink

Octonaughts is nice, completely non-gender specific, they all speak properly and spend their time saving sealife and stuff

I think my little pony is a little older

I'd stick with the train theme tbh. If she's interested in trains why would she want pink horses? Maybe she would like more construction based toys such as lego or similar? Or a more sophosticated train set.

The new My Little Ponies look a bit frightening, to be honest. And as for those strange half pony, half human hybrids - argh!

I'd assume she might stick with Thomas for a while yet. There is certainly a lot of merchandise to be consumed. I was a bit shocked when I got dd a Thomas magazine the other day - a double page pull out centrefold featured all of the approximately nine million characters now available, and the instruction to children "Tick us when you've collected us!" I was horrified - we've only got James and Percy so far (and they were lucky car boot finds.)

My DD has loved MLP for a while now, she was 3 back in May. The cartoon's are okay, I'm not a huge fan personally but she has always preferred animal stuff to people / baby / trains stuff IYKWIM. I don't let her watch Equestria Girls, so far the 'its for big school girls' line is working okay.

DD is just as happy with the branded sparkly MLP as she is with the supermarket knock offs --and random charity shop / carboot finds-- so don't feel you need to spend a great deal. Perhaps get her a couple of generic ponies and see if they take her fancy??

I have found with DD(8) trying to move her interests on to be a total failure but you do reach saturation point and think I cannot buy any more... Playmobil is quite good for having a theme for all interests - lots of horsey stuff there. And lego! We love lego! But if you think she would like MLP maybe start with just a couple of ponies to see if she takes to them? When I was little my sister got the dream castle for her birthday Envy.

My dd(3) and ds(5) love my little pony, I'm also looking for recommendations of mlp stuff as I can't seem to find much out there? Is there a set of the main characters you can buy does any know? Dd likes pinkie pie and rainbow dash best!

dannyboyle · 16/09/2014 21:34

Thank you all. We already have an awful lot of Lego, cars and other stuff so need to try something new to broaden horizons, although not pass on train stuff yet. Think we will pick up some of the supermarket ones to try. (And playmobil on Christmas list as well!).

My almost 4 year old loves my little pony, you get the individual little ponies with brush and hairclip for around a fiver at smyths/the entertainer/most supermarkets with a toy section but I've not seen them as a full set together. I noticed that sainsburys have the equestria girls dolls on 2 for £20 just now, they are normally about £12 each for a basic one, more for ones with extra accessories. The crystal castle playset with twilight sparkle included is half price at £9.99 just now too.

MARGUERITE18 · 17/09/2014 20:18

what about toy horses/stables that aren't my little pony, something that resembles real ponies better
