Went to a huge effort to make Cinnamon Rolls last year, and the kids didn't like them. Any other easy, special, delicious but slightly different ideas?

Last year's breakfast was toasted thick slices of chocolate orange panettone served with juice, bucks fizz for the grown-ups, tea and coffee. DD2 has asked for it again this year.

I bought the panettone in Morrison's.

My PIL always do pain au chocolat and croissants. My own parents do bacon butties. I generally have toast, which is a normal breakfast for me. Don't want anything fancy that might get in the way of me and an entire selection box Grin

Notso · 08/09/2014 15:05

DD really wants me to make cinnamon rolls this year.
We usually have bacon sandwiches, scrambles egg on toast, pain au chocolat, croissants and hot chocolate. PIL come at 9 and we often have mince pies then too.

We don't eat dinner until late and I don't really do any lunch so it keeps everyone going.

LairyPoppins · 08/09/2014 15:06

We have bagels with smoked salmon, philadelphia, lots of lemon and pepper.

And bucks fizz.

PumpkinsMummy · 08/09/2014 15:08

I like English muffins with scrambled eggs and smoked salmon with bucks fizz.

There is a Canadian dish called Christmas morning wife saver. Strange name, great dish!

Sorry, link didn't work as I'm on my phone.

poolomoomon · 08/09/2014 15:22

Last year I tried Nigella's Christmas morning muffins but wasn't blown away by them. I've come up with my own version which I will trial before the big day and hopefully have them...

We also have a selection of all homemade pastries. Pain au chocolat, Pannetone, croissants, cinnamon rolls (how can anyone not like cinnamon rolls Shock), thumbprint cookies with homemade jam. There's also a fruit platter to pick at and honey, homemade jam, nut butters and marmalade then milkshake for DC, eggnog for us.

minkah · 08/09/2014 15:29

Always have s.salmon on toast, with lemon and pepper, and lots of fresh coffee.

Cinnamon rolls sounds very delish. But I like a bit of protein to start Christmas day.

KnackeredMuchly · 08/09/2014 17:05

Every person gets their own choice of cereal, we have it with Jersey creamy milk

And selection boxes Grin

When my mil comes she drives 3 hours first thing so I do make bacon sandwiches then.

KnackeredMuchly · 08/09/2014 17:07

*they get to pick the cereal at the supermarket and save it till christmas day.

This harks back to only ever having Cornflakes or Branflakes so having something truly crap like Lucky Stars was amazing

crazykat · 08/09/2014 17:24

We have a normal breakfast so either cereal, toast or bacon sandwich. Its too hectic with four over excited kids to make anything more complicated. Plus the kids are more interested in their selection packs and we usually have Christmas dinner around 1pm so don't want anything too big for breakfast.

I find leisurely breakfasts over the Festive period is an adult thing. You want to eat at a nice table, have time to drink orange juice and fresh coffee. Eat freshly toasted bakery bread with scrambled eggs.
The DC don't

We have :
Christmas Eve: Waitrose croissants (not the frozen ones, I bought some last year, didn't like them) The ones from the Bakery dept with a black tray. I have jam, the DC have chocolate pushed inside before it's heated.
Orange juice , coffee. Main meal is lunch .

Christmas Day : coffee and toast, nothing more exotic

Boxing Day : Big Breakfast. (DH and I are vegetarian)
Toast, eggs, beans, Linda Mc sausages, Quorn bacon
DC have sausages (Pork chipolatas) and toast.

I might try hot chocolate and whipped cream
I made banana buns last year (like cinnamon buns but add banana chips and walnuts)
But that's more likely on one of the in-between days after Christmas

LuckySaint · 08/09/2014 18:22

I made reindeer pancakes last year, I found them on Pinterest. Streaky bacon for antlers, my dcs loved them.

lostmymarblesbutfoundthewine · 08/09/2014 18:26

we have pork pies, ( which we travel back to the Midlands to get) bread butter and pickles

ommmward · 08/09/2014 18:28

Huh? I didn't even know that a special Christmas breakfast was a thing. Normal breakfast here.

SlicedAndDiced · 08/09/2014 18:33

CHOCOLATE!!!

Every scrap of chocolate, left over bars, those giant tin things that seem to appear every Christmas, once an uneaten Easter egg.

Mmm lovely scrummy chocolate at 6am to get you all hyped up for present opening.

Time it just right so as the sugar crash hits you can eat dinner Grin

It's genius. No washing up or cooking required either.

(All cooked from scratch healthy food all year round, promise!)

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 08/09/2014 18:35

Or thinking about it over three months in advance Grin.

I just have whatever I fancy, like I do every day.

lovelyredwine · 08/09/2014 18:38

Scrambled egg, smoked salmon, toast, lemon and pepper. Buck's Fizz or orange juice.

Although this year I am thinking of cooking pancakes, bacon and sausages, wrapping in foil and taking in a backpack with coffee and hot choc when we go off on a Christmas morning walk. We can picnic on top of a hill (this will only happen if it's a lovely crisp winter morning, if pissing down see first option!).

Notso · 08/09/2014 18:39

The wife saver and the reindeer pancakes both sound great.
I made gingerbread muffins one year which everyone said smelled lovely but no-one wanted to eat.

I really like Christmas Morning breakfast as a 'thing'. For us it's a nice break in between opening the FC presents and PIL coming round with their gifts. We have Christmas crackers and Baileys hot chocolate.
It also helps the DC forget about the under the tree presents which we don't open until a Boxing Day.

Moltenpink · 08/09/2014 18:40

Home baked ham glazed with honey, lightly hard boiled duck eggs, bread with posh butter and English mustard. Yum

Shockers · 08/09/2014 18:42

Bacon sandwiches and Buck's Fizz. Then we go for a long walk up a nearby hill and take Christmas cake and flasks of coffee.

My favourite breakfast/brunch of the festive period is on Boxing Day. I mash up all the left over veg and potatoes from Christmas lunch, make it into patties and fry it, then top with poached eggs.

Shockers · 08/09/2014 18:43

Ooh molten, that sounds lovely!

katienana · 08/09/2014 18:46

fruit salad prepped on xmas eve with optional croissants. smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels also work for me.

Kundry · 08/09/2014 19:05

We do bacon sandwiches but with posh bacon from the farm shop we buy our Christmas meat from - it is nothing like supermarket bacon so is sheer luxury to eat.
