Boxes of nice luxury chocolates for Christmas - which one?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 04/09/2014 23:01

DH doesn't eat chocolate
DS not keen he likes jelly sweets
DD will sample anything (that's my girl Wink )

So...what nice box of chocolates should I buy for Christmas for me

I quite like the Thorntons in the white box (Continental I think)
I bought Lindt last year (nice but a bit heavy on the pralines)

I like nuts, no alcohol and no fruit+chocolate.

So.......any suggestions.
(The DC will get a tin of Heroes or Celebrations, so they won't feel deprived )

M&S have an Italian range of chocolates that are lovely if you like truffles.

MsAspreyDiamonds · 07/09/2014 10:15

Has anybody tried this place?
www.the-chocolate-tree.co.uk/

I want to try their salted caramel spread.

Oldraver · 09/09/2014 14:12

I've had Leonides in the past and they were gorgeous, so I bought some for OH and he wasn't impressed. He loves Lilly O'brien.

Thorntons went down the pan years ago.

The Bojangles truffles are really nice and reasonably priced but are a Saturday night treat for oh us, think I may have a look at Hotel Cocolat

Crutchlow35 · 09/09/2014 17:10

Marks did little boxes of chocolste truffles last year. They were amazing!

Oldraver · 09/09/2014 18:53

M+S did a box of salted (hard) caramel with three flavours, cherry pecan and something else. I have asked the last two years and live in hope thye will have them again

Chez Emily are nice if you're in Ireland.

I used to have a thing for a Thornton's mint, it was white chocolate mint truffle in white chocolate with mint crisp pieces in the chocolate. They were bloody lovely but they discontinued them. Now I only like their Viennese truffles and their white chocolate and fruit combos, though I don't really think of them as chocolate.

I'm going to have to explore better options, I'd rather have one small box of decent stuff than the 3 crates of plastic inedible crap Roses DH buys.

chocolates for chocoholics have fab chocolates many unique products and flavours. You can go to their website and order or they could try and put you in touch with a rep so you could order through them and then not pay postage.

boja booja

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 14/09/2014 14:17

Thanks lots to consider .
I'm going to start with some Hotel Chocolat Selectors then have a look online at the others.
I bought Booja Booja for my Mum, (dairy free) she liked them.

Not chocolates but bars. Amelia Rope. Quite expensive but best I've ever tasted. I treated myself last year.

MARGUERITE18 · 14/09/2014 18:39

the booja booja champagne and banoffee are nicest imo but they do 2 different selection cases too

Taffeta · 14/09/2014 20:41

Rococo sea salt chocolate wafers

IsItMeOr · 14/09/2014 21:30

Chococo is a lovely independent chocolate company in Dorset, and their chocolates (and boxes) are things of beauty.

OneSkinnyChip · 15/09/2014 15:16

Lir chocolates are lovely if you have anyone in Ireland who can send some? Lovely chocolate and lovely flavours, Thorntons price range but much nicer. Otherwise Hotel Chocolat are pretty reasonable compared to the big budget ones.

MARGUERITE18 · 15/09/2014 19:16

montezumas stuff is lovely too

Jbck · 15/09/2014 19:25

Tesco or Asda quite often have Lir at Christmas time.

MERLYPUSSEDOFF · 15/09/2014 22:28

Try Lidls truffle things in a hexagonal box - less than £2 but then you can get all three types. They also do Lindt stylee balls in different colours of chocolate. Most lidls chocolate is nice. Thorntons is crap IMHO.

(glad I'm not the only one who hates booze/fruit/mint and choc)

TheHammaconda · 16/09/2014 07:59

Neuhaus chocolates are really good. There's a branch in St Pancras by the Eurostar terminal. The Belgians I know go for Galler or Neuhaus. Not sure whether you can get Galler in the UK. Leonidis is nowhere near as nice.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/09/2014 13:33

I bought some Niederegger chocolate marzipan ( lush Grin ) I 6was^ intending saving them for Christmas (of course) but I sampled the Caramel Brownie ones ..........Blush in my defence there's only 8 in a pack .

Need to get some more, planning to buy some for my Mum too, now that I've taste tested them. (I knew what the plain ones taste like so they're safely sealed for now )

If I were buying for myself I'd go for posh gourmet-type chocs. I love orange ganache and amaretto truffles.

writtenguarantee · 10/01/2015 17:05

I feel like I got sucked into the glitz of hotel chocolat.

I thought "covent garden, fancy wrap, looks good". I bought a bunch of their drinking chocolat for friends at christmas, and bought the salted caramel chocolate drink for myself. 10 pounds a tin. not at all cheap.

If someone put the salted caramel chocolate drink in front of me I wouldn't be able to guess what flavour it is. i neither taste salt caramel nor chocolate because it's masked by a huge amount of sugar.

I also bought some eating chocolates. too sweet.

rant over.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/01/2015 17:22

I bought the Hotel Chocolat Tree Stars (boxes containing 3 thin chocolate snowflakes each) as Table Sweets. They were really nice.

As a Christmas chocolate box, I bought Milk Tray Blush (well, in my defence, my DMum was here. Riff Raff when it comes to chocolate, she likes Mis-Shapes Grin )

My DP bought me a M & S Swiss Chocolates Advent Calendar - they were by far the nicest chocolates we've had over Christmas.

I had a huge box of Lindt chocs which neither of us especially enjoyed, and there is still at least half a dozen boxes hanging about the house. We both said we'll get some of the Swiss chocolates over anything else. But to be honest neither of us can face chocolate for the time being!

MrsLindor · 13/01/2015 19:24

I was very disappointed with our fancy box of hotel chocolate winter desserts.
