You could also look at these magazines - Aquila, and Stew - both great independent magazines.
I find the ones that are made by large publishing houses are a bit boring, with a lot of advertising and sponsored posts (but understand that they need to bring in some money, it is a REALLY tough market).
The trick is to find something that she likes - and that will depend on whether she is more into nature (eg NG Kids) or History/Science/Arts (then Stew might be better).
On Jump! Mag, the aim is to mix the educational with the fun, so that the kids learn without it being too 'worthy', if you see what I mean. So we post fun facts, silly YouTube videos, mixed in with articles about history and science. All the content is checked, age appropriate and non-sweary, and written in a non-patronising way (some of it by our young readers).
