Which TV specials/dramas/films get you in the Christmas mood?

You know, those one-off dramas or specials that become classics, or maybe lesser known ones which you love. The ones which get dusted off each year in September that make you feel all sparkly and tingly and excited Grin

We love Bernard And The Genie, it's become a tradition that we watch it the evening we put the tree up with Bailey's all round. Not many people seem to have heard of it - it's a made for TV BBC film which was first shown in about 1992 with Lenny Henry, Rowan Atkinson and Alan Cumming. It's hilarious and sweet Smile

Also there's this silly TV film called The Ghost Of Greville Lodge which they put on usually in November - it's a children's ghost story with Prunella Scales and George Cole. Me and DD love it, we cosy up on the sofa with hot chocolate and get excited because Christmas is just around the corner!

What are your favourites?

The Greatest Store in the World is on YouTube (or was last year, anyway).

I prefer actual Christmas films (The Muppet Christmas Carol, The Bishop's Wife, It's a Wonderful Life) but I also love The Snowman, Father Christmas, The Gruffalo and the Dr Who special.

A Christmas Carol -any version though my favourite is weirdly the one with Ross Kemp (of all people) which is hardly ever shown.

I have to watch the Great Escape - though it's not remotely festive.

And Elf is my wrapping presents film.

Massive the Ross Kemp one was on last year - I'd never seen it before and it was absolutely wonderful! Definitely one of my favourite adaptations now, although the Patrick Stewart one will always be the best Smile

I have the Patrick Stewart version on my sky planner (along with loads of other xmas stuff) that I recorded last christmas. Dh asked a few months ago if he could delete it to which I replied, "no I need these to get me through the year." He looked at me like this-Hmm

Blackadder's Christmas Carol. I remember watching it on 23rd December one year when I was young and it reminds me of the excited anticicipation of being a child when it's nearly christmas Grin

Ooh great thread!

Nigella Christmas is great even if I've seen it loads of times. Bought the book last year and the recipes are fab.
Recorded a few Jamie ones last year but a lot of them are made up of rehashed clips so if you've seen one, you've seen them all!
Vicar of Dibley.
Christmas Lights. (Robson Green comedy drama)
The Snowman.
Wallace & Gromit.
Love Actually.
Home Alone & Home Alone 2.
A Christmas Carol. (Alastair Sim version. My DF and I watched it together most Christmas's when I was little)
Love Actually. (another Christmas tradition for DF and I that continued even after I left home)
A Nightmare Before Christmas.

Oh yy to the Bottom special! Although this year it'll be tinged with sadness Sad

Celia I've seen Bernard And The Genie on DVD on eBay but it's ludicrous money, something like £40. We have it on vhs but not sure it'll last many more Christmases (the player or the tape).

I remember The Greatest Store in the World, DesperatelySeekingSedatives!

One of the newspapers did give it away as a promotional dvd, at one time. It goes for silly money on ebay now thoughSad

I like watching:-

Santa Claus the Movie
Nativity (1&2)

Then Christmas specials of

The Royle Family
Only Fools and Horses
Gavin and Stacey
Some Mother's Do Ave Em
The Office

I am going to be watching Look Who's Talking Now, with my sisters tomorrow, I have a vague memory of it being Christmassy, but I can't be sure.

I HATE Elf. I realise I am in the minority.

And another vote for the Box of Delights.

White Christmas! perhaps the loveliest film ever made.

All the cookery specials, especially Delia's Christmas from the 80s.

Men Behaving Badly, the one where it's interspersed with a mock-up perfect christmas. Love it.

Anyone remember the Bottom Christmas special? Vodka margarine!

Damn! I was hoping you were going to give me some inside track on where to get Bernard and the Genie from OpheliaBalls.

At least I have proof it actually existed. DH is English, and looked at me like I was making up this thing he'd never seen or heard of, but somehow I had. Thank you mumsnetters - time to go wave this thread in DHs face!

As for our things to watch at Christmas:

Elf
Arthur Christmas
Muppet Christmas Carol

Time to up the ante on the Christmas viewing in our house....
