I bought a Wii U weeks ago as a shared present for DC. I was just wrapping it when I realised that all the writing on the outside is in Spanish, Italian and Portuguese, no English. I decide to check inside where my suspicions were confirmed: the instructions are not in English and worse, the plug is a two-pronged European one!
WTF am I meant to do with this? They won't be able to play it and I bought it 200 miles away so I can't just go in and swap it.
Any suggestions?

Is it a euro plug? You can buy an adaptor.

Sodding annoying, but you should be able to work round it.

Far more of a problem if it was America as their voltage is different.

So the voltage is the same (I'm thick as shit with electrical stuff)? If an adaptor is all I need then its not so bad. I had visions of "here kids, you can look but you can't play" which isn't very fun or festive!
Why are they selling them here though? Doesn't make sense.

You may struggle for games though.

We have an English Wii, but bought games in the states that our console can't read. No idea why Ninendo makes the games scripted differently in different countries, but your Spanish console might be useless here, unless you always source Spanish games.

Should be absolutely fine, USA use a different system for their TV, Spain don't.

You should get the option early in set up to set machine language, trouble is it will quite possibly ask you in spanish

was it sold to you as an english wii u in england? (or scotland, wales, n ireland etc?)

If so, I'd name and shame on fbook and twitter tonight and see if they can do anything!

good luck. I've just been going through my stuff and discovered that the click and collect stuff I picked up from John Lewis - I was picking up two orders and hadn't realised that one of them had 2 components, so need to go back again tomorrow. arrgh. and it was hell today!

I wouldn't want to keep it as the games probably won't be compatible. We've two 3DSs from two countries and they won't play each other's games.

Is it not like DVD regions, in which case the games should be fine?
Where did you buy it OP? If it's a reputable store then I would chance using it, if not then return unopened (after Christmas- contact them now though) and try and get one locally if you can afford it

I believe the european region is the same so it should play the games fine.same goes for games from australia.

BUT do google and check as the wii u is slightly different with regions than the original wii

It was sold to me in Ireland so should have the proper plug etc. I speak some Italian so should be ok to set up, but I'm not very happy about it. I have someone looking for an adaptor for me today but I shouldn't have to be doing that, it was 300€ for fucks sake! Big name store as well. I'd like to return it for a proper one but I can't face not letting the children play with their main present for the whole week, its just too cruel

i would phone email them today if you can.

tell them you will be setting it up..but you would like a english one.

if they are a big store they should understand and be very helpfull x

The only avenue for contact seems to be a Contact Us form on their website so I've filled that in. If I can get hold of an adaptor I will let them play it but still want a swap, I'm sure it breaks some kind of selling regulations?

Name and shame the store. Is it a large chain? You should be able to swap it in a different branch?

I've had a reply, but it seems like a standard response:

Which really gives me nothing at all. I'll be taking it back to my nearest branch the day after St Stephens Day when they reopen,and I won't be buying anything from there again.

If it is an eu console then it will play all PAL games as they are eu and in the same coding. Also as soon as you get all the wires in place you should have an option to choose language as "English" before going through the initial set up. If it turns out that it doesn't play the games you want (although I suspect this isnt the case) then you would be within consumer rights to take it back to the shop within 30days of purchase :) nintendo are a Japanese (I think) company so it's games are slightly different for Europe/USA/Asia etc but all Europe should be compatible.

Oh I should have said u would hav rights to refund or replace even if it is opened and used as it does not fulfil purpose bought for! Good luck and happy Christmas :)
