You only have it once a year, so no, I do not want stir fried sprouts, apricot stuffed swan or ice cream bombes.
I want goose, pudding, mince pies and vast quantities of fizz.

C'est tout

As you were.

This year I'm doing
Smoked salmon, asparagus and hollandaise sauce for the starter.

Then:
Roast beef
Roast Potatoes
Chips
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Yorkshire pudding
Gravy

With mince pies and cream for us and Icecream for the DC's for dessert.

Last year we had a full English breakfast Grin

None of us particularly like turkey so we do try and do something different. We thought about a BBQ this year but I don't think the forecast is that good so we're playing safe.

Aye, with you on that.
If I am going to overdo it, it will be on nice stuff, not cap.

Roast dinner of any sort acceptable I feel.
It is once people veer off into bbqs (nein!!), takeaways and deep freeze offerings that I stamp my sparkly shoes.

I always cook a traditional dinner because I worry if I try something new it would fail spectacularly

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 20/12/2013 13:52

a waxy chocolate purloined from the white artificial tree

Are you us, we are having pretty much identical menu there.

Minus califlower and we will be having Dill Mustard not hollandaise with smoked salmon.

Oh and for our puds, we think Heston xmas pudding ice cream.....then xmas cake......

Yummmy

Last year we flew to NZ for Christmas, arrived late late late on the 24th, fell into bed and woke up to a glorious sunny Christmas morning. MIL served cold bacon and egg pie and cold cuts for Christmas lunch with blue napkins and not a sniff of anything festive.

I will admit to slunking off to the bedroom after lunch for a wee cry, sooooooooooo much money to fly down to be there in time for Christmas day only to have cold bacon and egg pie!!!

CalamitouslyWrong · 20/12/2013 16:59

I'm making turkey for the first time ever. We don't enjoy Christmas Turkey, so I've decided to make a turkey roll with chestnut-free stuffing (because they're vile). Usually we have chicken. I wanted to do goose but H vetoed it saying 'gamey' and 'fatty'. Having just bought a turkey breast, I am amazed at how much of a rip off turkey is. Chicken is much, much better value, as well as tastier.

We're having pigs in blankets, stuffing balls, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, carrots, broccoli (because no one wants sprouts) and Yorkshire puddings with it. So not all that traditional.

No starter either (because we really don't need one) and red velvet brownies with cheesecake swirl for pudding.

WaitingForMe · 20/12/2013 19:49

Hello my name is WaitingForMe and I like to mix things up.

I have my brother coming for Christmas so things were largely going to be traditional but there are now crab canapés and the stuffing will be a cranberry studded log wrapped in smoked bacon and sliced at the table.

I can't help it. I'm an addict. Sorry.

BlondieTinsellyMinx · 20/12/2013 19:57

calamitous please tell me more about these brownies? They sound IMMENSE Grin

I hate roasts and cooked vegetables, and dried fruit in puddings or cakes. Christmas Day is the one day I grit my teeth and eat food I loathe (should stop eating at other people's houses I guess, but whilst they're still offering...) Thank you for all-year-round access to salad and the glory that is Hellman's (full fat) mayonnaise Smile

Atomiksnowflake · 20/12/2013 20:09

We are having smoked salmon tartar for starters and then fondue chinoise followed by white chocolate mousse with raspberrys

CalamitouslyWrong · 20/12/2013 21:06

Blonde: they are utterly delicious, and very easy to make. Here's the recipe. I used SR flour rather than plain flour, and it was lovely.

The red is quite festive. There are also some brilliant cookie recipes on that site.

BlondieTinsellyMinx · 20/12/2013 21:23

Thanks GrinGrinGrin

moondog · 20/12/2013 22:35

Zzzz are you having eight guests or is it perhaps 4 or 5 extra? Either way, I salute you.
God no, starter not needed at all to be honest.

Because traditional Christmas dinner is tasteless crap? I wouldn't eat a roast turkey/goose at any other time of the year, do I'm not going to do it then!
