Mil coming for Xmas. Has made lovely Xmas pud but it is enormous. A 450g one takes 3mins in microwave or 1hour to steam but thus bad boy is 3kg including bowl, 1kg800g itself. I haven't got hob space or steamer available to steam it for I'm guessing 2hours or more. Would you dare microwave it? If so how?!? Help!!!

Since she's made it, I'd steam it the day before, then zap for 6 minutes, poke and see how hot it is, then maybe another 3 minutes

mumteedum · 19/12/2013 22:10

She has already steamed it when she made it so would I still need to do this? I'm overthinking this as sure we've done it before but maybe not at same time as Xmas dinner! Thanks for advice.

I would be worried too. No way will the microwaves penetrate to the middle and too much heating near the surface will burn the sweet suety ingredients. Can you borrow an electric steamer? Or pressure cook it so it doesn't take so long on the hob? Steam in Slow cooker?

I've tried googling for you but not with much success. Heston's 1.2 Kg pud can be microwave heated eg at /850W: 6 mins on full power; stand for 2 mins; 7 mins on low power; stand for 3 mins. The answer might be low power and standing periods.

If you've got a slow cooker you can steam them in there. They are usually good for big puds too

Cut it up. microwave what you need. Save the rest for another day.

They get cooked in the slow cooker and chopped up and microwaved here.

You never need all a big one on Xmas Day

mumteedum · 20/12/2013 07:47

Don't have slow cooker. So do I gather that pudding should be steamed again Xmas eve before any attempt at microwaving (if can't borrow slow cooker?)

I've never made my own before. I know I've had one from mil previously and think would've steamed it but this was when we were just a couple and ate pudding Hours after main course I reckon. Can't really remember.

How long between you finishing with the hob for the main course and needing the pudding? You can put it on to steam whilst you're eating.

LittleMissGreen · 20/12/2013 08:47

there shouldn't be any need to reheat on Christmas Eve - it will have been pre-cooked when first made.
Microwave it slowly on a low heat with lots of standing time should work. (Not that I have ever made one quite that big).

Thanks for all suggestions. It has been sorted now. MIL says she re-steams for 2 hours. I mentioned poss to microwave if I find out how to do timings based on weight but she did not sound keen (she is scarey!) so she is bringing her pan and we will be steaming and having it whenever it is ready! I tried putting it in my steamer and it doesn't even fit. We won't be eating until January if we finish this pudding....I feel fat looking at it! Xmas Grin

Don't always want pud straight after main course on xmas day anyway so it'll be ok.
