Any suggestions for super quick and easy nibbley bits I can bung on my online shop for Christmas day?! Doesn't have to be much, just something nice (but not fancy...she doesn't do forrin or strange food)

HELP!!!! I have sooooooooooooooooooooooo much to do already I don't actually want to think for this one, just bung something on the table!

(I don't mind the visit btw & have enlisted a vast number of helpers for the weekend so the house will be useable)

tia for thinking for me Smile

Cheddar, cut into squares and either topped with something (something which sticks), or bare. Non-forrin, goes far, satisfies hunger, goes with white wine.

Grapes or melons. So much Christmas food is salty and dehydrating. Fruit requires minimal preparation, and it's hard to badmouth!

Cup of tea and a mince pie? Surely if she is just calling round for a quick visit she's not going to expect to be fed anyway. It would spoil her dinner or she would have eaten already and not want to feel obliged to eat again.

Shock

VoldemortsNipple, I initially read your username as a suggested hors d'oeuvre!

She'll be round fairly early Voldemort & none of us eat early on Christmas day...tends to be around 4pm or so.

A couple of non fancy cheeses and fruits sounds good. Maybe something sweet too Smile

i'd just do a cheeseboard... maybe with some crackers, a chutney and grapes on the side, breadsticks and dip?. easy peasy. i think you can actually buy cheeseboards as a pack now.

3bunnies · 19/12/2013 09:30

how could you not realise that you have moved 10mins from MIL has your time on MN taught you nothing

You could do brunch type food - are croissants too foreign for her, waffles? Or some mince pies /Christmas cake. Or if it is cold some soup and nice bread if veering towards midday.

raisah · 19/12/2013 09:48

Or whatever you were going to serve as a starter for xmas dinner to be served as a light lunch with mince pies. That should stave off hunger pangs until the main meal & people can go straight to the main course without filling up on starters as they ate it earlier.

Or a cheese board/ crackers or a soup with crusty bread.

lucysmam · 19/12/2013 10:17

I think too much variety of cheese might make her head pop Grin She likes simple stuff really. Soup and some crusty bread followed by a mince pie sounds good though & not going to give me any more of a headache than I already have Hmm

3bunnies...you would think so but I don't actually know the area we are going to that well...there's all sorts of snickets and shortcuts & one leads pretty much to MIL's door

All the supermarkets sell tubs or cartons of ready made soup, which are very nice, you can usually heat them up in the container in the micro wave too.

lucysmam · 19/12/2013 13:25

marvellous....soup here is usually something to use up rogue veggies & she probably wouldn't eat that either
