So what have you bought the Difficult Uncle?

Everyone has one, surely? I love him to bits but he's a bugger to buy for. He's retired, likes gardening and reading, is into current affairs, reads history books about the twentieth century, likes watching football, motorbikes and programmes like Deal or No Deal, the Apprentice and that Paul O'Grady thing about dogs. I've bought him a book but want to spend about £20 on something else. DVDs and CDs are received politely then sit in their wrappers forever. He wears the same clothes all the time so no point getting a jumper or shirt. I've given him all the gardening accessories in previous years I can think of - he's got a birdbath, lots of tools, nice planters etc. He wouldn't like an "experience" type of gift. So wtf can I get that is more thoughtful than a gift voucher?!

Similarly I have a godfather who is difficult. Many passions but very specific and inaccessible to the layman type passions. Here are some ideas:

Private Eye annual / subscription
Slippers / Scarves / Gloves in conservative colours
Posh Chocolate
Retro style Games
Lovely notebooks
Easy reading non-fiction e.g. Danny Baker's autobiography, Morrissey memoir (might be a bit young for your uncle...)

Hmm. I'm pondering a magazine subscription...not sure he's like PE, but maybe a car or motorbike one...

Oh I have one of these.

In the past he has been given a year's subscription to Private Eye. A delivery of cheese from Neal's Yard Dairy. A CD of Andrew Marr's A History of Britain. A set of Prestat hot chocolates...

Something like Beer Bods? Drink a beer per week and leave a report on how he liked it (or not). Some can be very interesting.

DDs have 2 uncles - one on each side, neither are difficult though Xmas Grin. Single malt whisky for one, a Raspberry Pi book (as requested) for the other. Easy peasy.

Naice gentleman's woolen scarf like Jasper Conran at Debenhams?

everydayaschoolday · 18/12/2013 20:20

ffs woollen Xmas Blush

AHardDaysWrite · 18/12/2013 20:20

He's not a big drinker, but that would be a brill present for someone who was - might file away for DH next year!

Hmm, the Andrew Marr CDs sound interesting...

Molton Brown shower gels. They did 25% off a few weeks ago, so I bought 5 or 6 of the 50 ml sizes then.

I know it's not imaginative but smellies. He smells you see...

If he's into history - BBC History magazine subscription might be up his street, think a 6 month subscription is around £20
