My 4 year old doesn't believe in santa

I know it's not the end of the world but it makes me a bit sad.

Ds suddenly announced that santa wasn't possible because the sleigh would have to be huge for all the presents and then it wouldn't be able to fly. I've tried telling him it's magic but apparently he has given it 'considerable thought' and decided that santa isn't possible. He said 'I'm sorry to tell you mommy but santa is not real.'

How terribly sad. I would just continue and insist he is real, you believe etc! Elf on the shelf is a good dvd for non believers!!!

Aw....!

If he is bright enough to have worked it out, I would leave it TBH. I wouldn't try to push him into believing.

I do believe that, in a way, Father Christmas is real - its just that he's not a fat man in a red suit with flying reindeer he is a parent. The sentiment behind the myth is still very much real.

capsium · 18/12/2013 16:19

Tell him about St Nicholas and the other myths and legends and how this gave us a good idea for celebrating Christmas and we like carrying the tradition on. In a way we are all acting as Santa Smile. Also how people like to imagine this as the red suited guy coming down the chimney etc.

DitsyDonkey · 18/12/2013 16:21

Tell him he won't be getting any presents so.....neh! I'm cruel though!

VenusDeWillendorf · 18/12/2013 16:25

Same as my dd.
She's gifted etc etc apparently.
Also doesn't believe in the tooth fairy, easter bunny, angels, fairies or god.
Knew she was mortal at two years old - knew I was mortal a few seconds after that.

Congratulations on having an interesting child. Don't try and make her believe in things that aren't in her best interest (see above) if she's not inclined.

Onelittlebugbear · 18/12/2013 16:26

I said 'but who will bring you gooey louie if santa doesn't?' And he said 'you will mommy.' And I said 'but it's gross, I wouldn't buy it' and he said 'I will save my pocket money then.'

My ds has never really believed - he doesn't do magic either. I don't push it, but we do fun santa things but not elf on the shelf.

Doesn't seem to have dented any of the magic of christmas for him, and he's 7

Beastofburden · 18/12/2013 16:31

My kids never believed it I'm afraid. And i have never gone in for telling them that the big presents were from santa. They still loved Christmas.

As for the tooth fairy... DS1 lost a tooth and I gave him the spiel. He listened gravely and then said, "how many teeth have I got left?"

We both looked and agreed he had another 20 to go.

"Can I have £15 for them now, then," he asked, "there's some Lego I really want".

I had to explain that the tooth fairy did not do mortgages.

BettyandDon · 18/12/2013 16:33

When my brother was 5 he told my mum at Easter time after a school assembly 'the priest thinks people come back from the dead. That's not right is it mummy'. Kids are very clever.

Onelittlebugbear · 18/12/2013 16:40

Actually if I'm honest I don't think I ever believed. I can remember thinking it would be impossible to travel around the entire world in one night.

My 15 and 13 year old DSs still believe because I told them that if they didn't, he wouldn't bring them any presents :o

Onelittlebugbear · 18/12/2013 16:42

Cunning.

I think my four year old felt bad for breaking the news to me that santa isn't real! I think he thinks that I believe!

That was lovely.

Although it is meant to be the other way round :)

Onelittlebugbear · 18/12/2013 17:01

I know!

He sounded quite concerned!

I never believed either. My DM said that even at age 2, I shook my head and told them not to be so silly. It's not sad in the slightest. I adored Christmas, still do. And a fat man in a jolly hat wasn't responsible for that.

DD is 6 and has never believed. She's Captain Logic. Similarly, she loves Christmas but is a thinker not a believer.

PPaka · 18/12/2013 17:05

Let him watch Arthur Christmas
