Where do you stand on mash?

I think it's rather pleasant to have for to sop up gravy, but I know that some MNers think it's a giant faux pas.

Shock

Hmm?

Mash? If the husband is cooking, it's my must have. If I'm cooking - what's wrong with jacket spuds/roasts.

I love mash but hate making it.

Lucylouby · 15/12/2013 09:29

I love mash, but we don't have it at Christmas, only roast. I suspect that's because we go to my mums and roasts are my brothers favourite and I'm being put in my place by being given my brothers favourite potato ( in the nicest possible way).

Jacket spuds on Christmas Day? Shock Now that is beyond the pale. Wink

It's a hassle, but I love it so.

Sirzy · 15/12/2013 09:33

I don't like roast potoato so always have mash on Christmas Day

coffeeandcream · 15/12/2013 09:33

Mash or JPs have no place whatsoever on the Christmas table. Blasphemy to even suggest Angry

See, I feel so strongly I posted twice (oops) Grin

ginmakesitallok · 15/12/2013 09:35

Its the first step to duchesse potatoes which are a must ( along with roasties)

RubyGoat · 15/12/2013 09:36

We have roast potatoes. Preferably roast new potatoes still in their skins.

And DH would never forgive me if I stood on the mash.

BunnyLebowski · 15/12/2013 09:37

What coffee said. Mash has no place in a Christmas dinner. Flavourless mush.

Now if only someone could convince my Irish mother of that........

500internalerror · 15/12/2013 09:38

But Xmas dinner is roasties AND mash!

ThePollyAndTheIvy · 15/12/2013 09:38

My DSM makes mash and roasts every Sunday roast, just more of everything for Christmas!

I thought everyone had both...

Pancakeflipper · 15/12/2013 09:38

Roast pots only and masses of them. Enough for leftovers to eat cold later.

ClausIsTrulyReal · 15/12/2013 09:40

Some floks think mash is akin to putting sweercornon their late at Christmas.

Now that would raise eyebrows.

Roasties and mash surely.
It's not right to have just roasties. They're like an extra not part of the main?

Weirdos

:)

ClausIsTrulyReal · 15/12/2013 09:41

Huh.

SWEETCORN

OP posts:
JuneauWhoIAm · 15/12/2013 09:41

Cold roasties?! Definite weirdos!

ClausIsTrulyReal · 15/12/2013 09:41

Gah

Mash mash! Love mash with a pash. How can you not have mash with Christmas dinner?

Dearly missed Fell Nel posted this excellent tip for mash a while ago.

Simply half your potatoes then boil them in their skins, place cut side downwards into the magic ricer and it beautifully mashes and removes the skins in an easy peasy way.

So easy I now get the dc to make the mash. Smuggy McSmuggerkins.

noblegiraffe · 15/12/2013 09:43

We are having mash and roasties. We are also having peas, which I understand some frown on. And NO sprouts.

And it will be delicious.

WhirlyByrd · 15/12/2013 09:44

Roast and mash. That's the law here!

MardyBra · 15/12/2013 09:44

Do you have shepherds watching those floks, Claus?

Mash is for toad in the hole and onion gravy. Never a roast.

MardyBra · 15/12/2013 09:47

In fact it has never occurred to me to add mash and I've never seen it on a roast. [sheltered life]

biryani · 15/12/2013 09:47

Love it. Worth plenty of butter, naturally. We used to have "creamed"spud at home, with all the lumps painstakingly taken out.
