Fun card games for 6yo up?

I'd really like to get a card game to put in my DS (very nearly 6)'s stocking. We've recently really got into playing games as a family (also have DD who is 8) and a lot of the games we have now seem a bit young for them (and boring for the adults). Card games also good as they don't take ages to set up and good for travelling with.

Can anyone recommend a really fun card game that can be equally enjoyed by children and adults? We already have and enjoy UNO, Too Many Monkeys and a random Scooby Doo (one which is based on UNO).

Something that gets a bit raucous would be great!

When I was a child we had a fab game by Galt called Ooky Spooky, I wish it was still available!

Dd has some Brainbox games like this and ds has this that he enjoys.

My 6 year old loves Dixit. It takes a couple of games to get what they're supposed to do but it works quite well. She also loves pass the bomb which gets quite raucous and zoo am I.

Or a pack if actual playing cards, then there are literally thousands of games you can play both raucous and not. You could always get s book with card games to supplement.

Gamewright's Sleeping Queens is a huge favourite both with 8yo DS and 5yo DD! Good fun for adults too. Other card games we have enjoyed and that work well for both 6yo and older are Zeus on the Loose, Duck Duck Bruce and Rat a tat Cat, but Sleeping Queens is our current favourite.

DS (6) loves playing Hello Jack at the moment. You play with a deck of normal cards, dealt out evenly among the players. Each player takes it in turn to lay a card, if it's a Jack you have to say "Hello Jack", if it's a Queen you wave, you salute a King and for an Ace, slam your hand down on the table.
The last person to do the right action has to pick up the cards and the person to get rid of all their cards first wins.
It's quite simple but can get fun and silly trying to get all the actions right! And then arguing over who was first!

Pit is great - gets pretty raucous - we used to play with my grandparents.

Monopoly Deal is also fun - you get cards that let you steal from other players.

Happy Families and Donkey - good fun to steal cards, or palm the donkey off on someone.

DS is getting Fluxx for Christmas - rules are very simple to start with but change throughout the game.

But agree with Anne - I'm planning to get the proper cards out this Christmas with my parents, and teach DS some of the card games I loved as a kid - if I can remember all the rules!

Ooh, like the sound of Hello Jack - think my boys would enjoy that.

Just thought of another - Phase 10 - it's a bit like rummy with Uno cards - but different challenges in each phase, and you move on to the next phase when you've completed the current one, so players can be on different phases. Can be a long game, or a shorter one if you only play a few phases.

Dobble is brilliant, and works well with a big age range.

And, not a card game but easy to set up is Hey Thats my Fish which we love, and is super easy to play but can be really strategic if you are in the mood

cornflakegirl · 13/12/2013 17:02

Dibbler - have just bought Dobble - thanks for the recommendation. I think 4yo DS2 will enjoy it.

Set is another excellent game - it's about pattern recognition over four attributes (colour, number, shape, shading). We either simplify it for younger ones (so they can ignore eg colour and shading) or give them a handicap (each set counts double) or both. Can be quiet or rowdy depending on whether DS1 is playing.

I had thought of getting some normal cards but I can never remember the games! Hello Jack sounds like it would be great fun. I'm going to have a search for a good book of card game instructions.

Also like the sound of Dobble, it looks like the sort of game where children and adults are fairly evenly matched (actually my children are way more observant than me so I'd probably lose dismally.)

Strip Jack Naked is another one that's good to play with an ordinary deck. You have to put down 1 card for a Jack, 2 for a Queen, 3 for a King and 4 for an Ace. This time, it's whoever gets all the cards that win!

We have Pit too, which is good fun but ideally you need at least 3 people. As it's only me and DS most the time we're always looking for good card games that can be played well with only 2 people.

AnneWentworth · 13/12/2013 22:39

Strip Jack Naked was my favourite game from my childhood. I could still play it for hours. We called it blackjack! My kids call it something ridiculous like one for a hack, two for a queen etc.

Rufustherednosedreindeer · 13/12/2013 22:43

Bedlam and blink are very good card games that you can buy

Spoons you only need a pack of cards and some spoons, very raucous, very loud and lots of fun

Rufustherednosedreindeer · 13/12/2013 22:44

Collins gem family card game book is very good

I just wanted to do a quick update as you were all so helpful!

Thanks to the advice on here I ended up getting this set of regular cards which comes with instructions for some games, plus I've ordered Sleeping Queens for 8yo DD.

I've still got my eye on Dobble too, and Pass the Bomb. Xmas Grin

Thanks again to all who replied!

Skip Bo is a fab game.

Luggage16 · 16/12/2013 21:14

Cheesecakefactory · 17/12/2013 03:28

Old Maid my six year old loves it.

FelineExtraStrongMincePie · 17/12/2013 04:51

Pleased you've bought Sleeping Queens OP, as I came on to suggest it. Smile

Too Many Monkeys is also good.

I don't much like playing games, but I like these!
