paper chains - nice or tacky?

House is looking a bit bare re decorations and I don't want to spend loads of money. Quite fancy making something - are paper chains cheap-looking and tacky, or can they look effective and festive? What about if I just use red and green paper?

One of my saddest childhood memories is paperchain related. I was about 12 and I'd spent my own money in Woolworths buying gummed paperchain strips. I sat happily making them, full of warm christmassy feelings. I festooned the living room with to surprise my mum. She pulled them down saying she hated paperchains. I don't know what the issue was, she certainly wasn't house proud. I felt utterly crushed. So please let your kids put up their crappy homemade decorations - you could be saving yourself lots in therapy bills.

mutant that's so sad :( I agree with your last comment though, Christmas is about the kids so let them do what the hell they like with the decorations!

I have to say I just dont think paper chains and tacky can exist in the same sentance though, they are classic, victorian decs...
